Apparently, it was this girl's friends who really weren't
helping. They started attacking Homer Hickam with some hashtags
that caught NASA's attention.
Yes, I followed this when it was happening. (I and Mr. Hickam
followed each other on Twitter until he deleted his account due
to this situation.) He and the girl had a private conversation,
and he later publicly tweeted that he ended up being impressed
with her, but her friends were tweeting him and tagging NASA.
They were saying some dreadfully vile things. That's why NASA
pulled the internship - not the F bomb, but all the other stuff
that tagged them.
And as far as being scolded by a complete stranger, if anyone -
including the young woman in question - had bothered to look at
his profile, it was pretty obvious that he was a VIP in the
space industry.
Yeah, I never thought she lost her internship because of a
swear word, but for her reaction.
It shouldn't even matter of he's a VIP. Even if he's a cashier
at a grocery store, she shouldn't treat people like that. Most
things that go viral are from average Joes. And it *will* get
back to the boss what kind of person you are and who you
associate with.

I completely agree with Mr. Hickam's point. Although like
someone else pointed out he should've been more clear to begin
with instead of just tweeting the word "language" to her. It
completely disgusts me that profane language has become
acceptable and even "cool" in today's society. It seriously
bothers me that people go around talking like this constantly
and now think it's "normal" when it's just vile and disgusting.
And I seriously don't understand why he'd be willing to get this
young lady's (and I use that word loosely) internship reinstated
for her. I agree I don't think she deserves it at all after the
way she reacted to him. But then it's not my problem and I'm not
the one who's going to have to work with her. I just hope for
Mr. Hickam's sake it doesn't end badly. But if that's how she
behaves when she gets publicly scolded who knows how she'll
behave while she's actually working for them and she gets in
trouble for making some kind of mistake. But if NASA wants to
give her back the internship that's their business but I
certainly don't agree with it.
Ed.

I suspect that she may actually be deeply interested in NASA's
work, and have some intelligent ideas about it. I can't say as I
fault her very much for using a profanity in her joy at being
accepted. I *can* fault her for her reply, which was
aggressively vulgar, but it sounds like that's the sort of
milieu she's used to.
I'd give Mr. Hickam props for understanding that young people,
even the smartest, can sometimes do very stupid things.

It's one thing to be chidden by a stranger on the Internet, and
I totally understand the resentment and (I think) righteous
pushback against double-standard policing of young women's
speech, and the entitlement some men feel to tell women how to
exist.
But that's not what was going on. Mr. Hickham was quite right to
caution her about how she used the #Nasa hashtag because she was
representing the agency and she could face repercussions.
I do wonder though, if you long to work in aerospace and are
savvy enough to win an internship at NASA, how do you *not* know
who Homer Hickam is, and that he is your boss' boss?

I can always tell how long a new person will last at a job,
based on three things: the group of friends who come to visit
them (in person or online); the lack of "hey, friends, cut out
that behavior in public"; them confiding to me "I think I did
something outrageously funny / edgy, but it's everyone else who
has a stick up their butt. Rules are so lame. I'm just gonna do
what I want." I learned that at my first job as a teenager &
it's been true at every job since ::)

I’m shocked none of her friends recognized Homer Hickman’s name.
I mean, it not like it’s John Smith, and Rocket Boys was a
fairly popular movie for the science-y types...

I've never heard of him, but I'm not interested in the space
program.
But if he is easily recognizable in that field, then I'm
surprised the girl wasn't aware by just glancing at the name of
who posted. (((shakes head)))

He's also an author and one of his memoirs, Rocket Boys, was a
best-seller and was made into a movie, October Sky, that starred
Jake Gyllenhaal and Chris Cooper. My local middle school shows
it in science class. He's currently on the Advisory Board for
the International Space Council (in charge of the ISS).
As the t-Shirt says, when it comes to space, he's "kind of a big
deal."

maybe she didn't really look at the name, and just assumed it
was someone in her circle of peers. That was a pretty jocular
response to him--at least, it seemed that way to me.
I know when I'm reading here, I don't really look to see who
wrote the post most of the time. Sometimes I can tell who it is
by their style, and I'll check to verify. Or I'll want to
directly respond. But I usually don't bother.
Twitter moves fast, so maybe she just responded without looking
to see who it was.
