How to lose your dream job
By: Twik Date: August 27, 2018, 9:10 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
So, a young woman got accepted for an internship at NASA, her
dream, and immediately rushed to tell all her friends on
Twitter. She chose to use the F-word in the tweet.
She got a one-word response from an older person named Homer
       Hickam, saying "Language."
Now, she might have ignored this, but decided the best way to
respond was to tweet back "(perform impossible sex act on me)
       I'm working at NASA!"
The return to her tweet was "And I am on the National Space
       Council that oversees NASA."
Bye-bye internship. NASA doesn't like their long-time leaders
told to engage in such activities.
Apparently, though, there is a silver lining. Mr. Hickham, whose
first tweet had been intended to make her aware that her new
employers could see her tweet and she might consider sounding
more professional, is working to get her reinstated. But it
really does make me wonder if today's "media smart" generation
really does understand just how social media works.

I’m glad to see that some are holding to standards. I tell the
grandkids (11 years to 25) that few will notice the lack of
certain words, but many will notice the use. And you never know
       who is listening.
I do hope she gets the job back and shares her lesson learned.
That’s just really what she learned in growing up and young
       adulthood.

:o Anyone not bright enough to know better than to do
something like that doesn't deserve to be reinstated!

helping. They started attacking Homer Hickam with some hashtags
       that caught NASA's attention.

I like to think of myself as forgiving, but I agree that she
doesn't deserve to be reinstated. If you are that immature that
you behave in such a way on social media, you are better suited
to an opportunity that's much less coveted and prestigious. I
think she should learn the lesson, but at an entry level
position in corporate america, and someone who has a little bit
of sense already should be awarded the NASA internship. I'm sure
many who are more deserving have applied.

And who would want a coworker with her attitude, anyway?

"Language" sounds so scolding from a complete stranger. I felt
he should have introduced himself or at least posted more, like
"Language like this is frowned upon at NASA and in many
workforces. You may wish to be careful since you don't know who
       might see."
But she could have shut him down in a cool "Miss Manners" way
instead of going off and cursing more. This shows her immaturity
and crassness. I don't know much about NASA but I believe they
need cool heads working for them.
And for goodness sake. Make your twitter private!

Yes, I followed this when it was happening. (I and Mr. Hickam
followed each other on Twitter until he deleted his account due
to this situation.) He and the girl had a private conversation,
and he later publicly tweeted that he ended up being impressed
with her, but her friends were tweeting him and tagging NASA.
They were saying some dreadfully vile things. That's why NASA
pulled the internship - not the F bomb, but all the other stuff
       that tagged them.
And as far as being scolded by a complete stranger, if anyone -
including the young woman in question - had bothered to look at
his profile, it was pretty obvious that he was a VIP in the
       space industry.

Also, I cannot imagine (though I may be incorrect) that NASA
doesn't have a protocol and standard of behavior policy that
they make known to a candidate. She presumably should have
received that, and then be held to it.

Yeah, this girl, and her friends, need to learn that everything
is connected nowadays. One flip comment could cost you dearly.
I was on a FB group for a hobby that is mostly young people.
For a while, everything was good. Until one member “dissed”
another and it was off to the races. Trolling, hacking pages,
etc., as part of a “war” between two factions and they were
blatant about posting about it. At the same time, some of the
worst offenders were talking about graduating college and
       finding jobs.
Having worked IT at a major corporation, I wrote, both on
Messenger and on the group page that it wasn’t a good idea to
brag about illegal exploits on the Internet, where potential
employers could see. They said they used servers in New Zealand
so their IPs would never be traced, so what’s the problem? My
last response before I left the group was any major corporation
with an IT worth their salt was probably all over those New
Zealand servers and, if they really wanted to, could “find
anything you sent and the color of your shorts the day you sent
       it.”
