       Adjusting the thermostat
       By: katiekat2009 Date: August 20, 2018, 9:13 am

My husband and I used to belong to a social group of card
players. We would alternate hosting in our homes and everyone
would bring food. The group consisted of 12 members and three
tables of four people were set up around the house. During one
of my hosting events, one member kept stating she was hot, so I
adjusted the themostat down. Then another began to say she was
cold, so we would move it back up a bit. The other 10 people
were fine either way. I put the hot person over an air
conditioning unit in the floor and moved the cold person away
from it and gave her a shawl. This didn't completely satisfy
either and, throughout the party, they would both sneak to the
thermostat and adjust it. I was flumoxed and not happy! One
pertinent bit of information - the person who was hot, had
cancer and had been undergoing treatment (she has since passed).
I thought of this because, yesterday, I had different visitors
and one jumped up and adjusted the thermostat herself. What
       would you do as host?

Wow, I've never had anyone change my thermostat without my
permission. I've sorely wanted to change someone else's
thermostat when staying over the night, but would never do it.
If I saw someone at the thermostat, I'd probably ask "Were you
needing something?" If that didn't scare them away and they
actually admitted to changing it, I would say "I'd rather be in
control of my thermostat if you don't mind. Please don't change
       it."

IMO nobody visiting in your home should touch your thermostat
but you. If anyone visiting my home did that I would have to
change it back and tell them not to touch it again. If they
told me they were cold or hot I would try to find a remedy for
them; but nobody adjusts my system but me!

Oh, gosh, if I'm too hot/too cold, I'm going to ask if something
can be done, not hop up and start changing things! Doesn't
happen to me a lot, ever since I learned the "dress in layers
when going somewhere the heat may be an issue" idea.
Certainly if someone ill is having trouble with the heat in my
home, I'll be glad to adjust it, but every thermostat is
different, so I'd prefer to do it myself.

My thermostat is set such that other members of my household
find it just a bit cool and I find it a bit warm. So anyone
adjusting the thermostat would be adjusting it way out of the
comfort zone of some member of the household. And would get
       thoroughly chewed out by me.
       You're too hot? Here's a fan. You're too cold? Here's an
afghan or a sweater. Or a dog. Or a cat.

I'd tell them to "Please leave that alone," unless they were
volunteering to pay that month's utility bill.

I’ve only seen someone do that once in the media center I worked
in all day and he visited one hour a week.a week. I thought that
       was awful.
That is my home. Don’t mess with it. Don’t rearrange my
antiques. Don’t try to paint a wall. Don’t adjust my thermostat
or the way the curtains and blinds are open or closed.

My best friend is very cold natured and I am very hot natured.
We will adjust our thermostats somewhat during visits, but it's
still not completely comfortable (I've been known to wear shorts
and tshirt over to her house in the winter cause i know i will
be so warm inside). So she bought a small table top fan that I
use when I go to her house and I bought her a Harry Potter
themed snuggie for her to use at my house. And even though we
are the walk in the door, kick your shoes off, get your own dang
water and bring me some too while you're at it type of friends,
we would still never dream of adjusting each other's
       thermostats.

I agree 100%. I can't believe someone would adjust the
thermostat in someone else's home. I've never done it or seen it
       done!
I have blankets, fans, hot drinks & cold drinks. I'd do what I
could to make someone more comfortable, within reason.
We have a Nest system that we control from our phones/iPads. I
would be LIVID if someone tried to mess with the wall unit.
