       Featherweight for $25!!!
I just found out on Sunday that my Pastor's wife probably sold a
Featherweight (Singer 221 machine) for $25 before they moved
here! Aargh!! She was decluttering, and didn't know what she
had. She saw mine over at a friend's house (her daughter is
borrowing it to finish her quilt) and said yeah, it was in a
case like that, maybe a little bigger (they did change the cases
from time to time) and yeah, it pretty much looked like that...
I would have paid her at least $100 for it. It sounded like it
       was in great condition too...

I was looking at those on ebay after your post. Oh my!
It made me call my Mom and ask what she did with her circa 1960s
$99 Singer. Unfortunately she gave it away.
In other news, she just bought a Brother embroidery machine that
is so much fun. I went for a visit and we had a ball.
I don't sew (yet!) but Mom has been sewing since she was a child
and her sister got a Singer. My Aunt didn't want to take the
free sewing lessons so Mom piped up and said she would go
instead. So I have always been around the craft, just never
       took it up for myself.
Mom just gave me her Bernina! She decided she was happy with her
old machine. So I guess its really time for me to learn now.

That's great, Hanna! I was never into sewing clothing, to my
mother's chagrin. She was astonished when I took up quilting,
but quilting's a LOT simpler! I eventually sucked her into the
       quilting vortex too.
My friend has a fabbo embroidery machine. I think it would be
fun to have too but gosh, I have enough lined up to keep me busy
for years, and my friend will embroider whatever I want for me,
so I have the best of both worlds!

We all have a lot of things around that someone somewhere would
pay a nice amount of cash for, but when it is time to do serious
decluttering, we don’t have time to wait around for that perfect
       someone.
My friend tried for years to sell some lovely Venetian glass
goblets in perfect shape for half the going price on EBay. The
family sent them to the charity shop because she wouldn’t take
       the best offer.
I never know if theses threads are really about the sewing
machine itself or about buying and selling in general.

So much this. Sometimes the person who will find <thing>
valuable just isn't getting the word. And sometimes you just
have to move on something, knowing someone else would pay more,
do more, etc. Sometimes waiting for the perfect circumstance is
       a luxury one doesn't have.

haha! This one was about the sewing machine. She really didn't
know what a little jewel she had. I would have loved to have
bought it, had I only known.

Mom is also a quilter. It’s sweet to hear you say it’s simple,
but as a non quilter that makes me laugh!
Mom is currently using her embroidery machine to make blocks
that she will turn into a Baltimore Album quilt.

Truly, it looks complicated, but it's all straight stitching -
no reverse even! And there are so many patterns available
nowadays that you don't have to do all the gazintas yourself!
(Gazintas - two goes into four... two gazinta four! in other
words, the math!) And "modern" quilting makes it too easy. Most
so-called modern quilts are just squares and rectangles, and
more for showing off the fabric than intricacy of design. You
don't need a fancy machine, that's why Featherweights are
prized. They have the best straight stitch, because they don't
do zig zag etc. They just go forwards and backwards, mostly
forwards if you're sewing quilt tops on them.
Oooh... a Baltimore Album by embroidery... I am going to have to
put a bug in my friend's ear!
