At the one where I go, the servers do not walk around during the
movie. I would be surprised if they did this at any of them.
Essentially, you have to show up early if you want dinner with
your movie. They are extremely quick about taking the orders
and getting them out.
I LOVED it! The food was so good I would go there just for the
food! And you could order not only popcorn but candy!
But, once the show started that was it. They don't disturb
people during the movie.
The little table that we ate on could swing out of the way. So,
after we finished, we just swung our dishes away from us.
If we needed a refill or something else, we needed to leave the
theatre and go out to the lobby to the bar to order it there.
There were several things I really liked about this:
1. When you make your reservation you pick your seats so you
know exactly where you are going to be.
2. The food was really good. Makes me hungry right now just
thinking about it!
3. Because it costs more, people tend to behave better.
4. The recliners are great! There is also more room between the
rows. Even if someone pulled out a phone to check a text a row
in front of you, you probably wouldn't see it because of how the
seats are. There's just a bit more room between you and other
people.
That said, the seats are in two's for the most part. So, it's
perfect for a date night. Maybe not so perfect for going out
with an odd number of friends. One person would end up sitting
rather close to someone they don't know.
I haven't been to a regular theater since!

I think it depends on the theater. At one of these kinds of
theaters in my area, the waiters are able to come around without
disturbing the moviegoers.

We have one close to us, and each row of seats is raised a
little above the row in front of it so that movement in front of
you isn't quite so bothersome. The servers also squat or bend
over when speaking with someone and everything is conducted in
whispers.
That being said, I don't enjoy trying to eat my food in almost
total darkness. I like to be able to make sure that my order is
correct, and I can't always do that based on the timing of
things coming out of the kitchen. I will go to "dinner and a
movie" in a place like this, but it's not my preference to eat
there. I do really enjoy the reclining seats.

I have never been to a cinema that does this, but I once
attended a Rufus Wainwright concert in a theatre with a bar at
the back of the auditorium. The constant disruption of people
going backwards and forwards for their drinks drove me batty.
Having meals served during a film, with all the noise of menu
discussion, clattering of trays and cutlery on delivery, food
smells, servers constantly moving about etc - possibly just at
poignant or climactic moments - no thanks. I'd rather wait for
the DVD to come out and watch in peace and quiet at home!

The theater that I attended (Alamo Drafthouse) was set-up to
keep distractions to a minimum. It has been a number of years,
but as I recall, the servers approached you at the time that you
sat down so that the process could get started prior to the
movie. However, I recall that if you wanted to order something
that you completed a card and placed it within a holder and then
the server walked along a path in front of your seat to obtain
it, as well as to deliver any orders. I do not recall it being
all that distracting at all, but my party was not dining
(drinking only.) But I could easily see a situation where it
would be annoying. I someday hope to go back to such a
theater... none currently in my area! =)

This was my exact experience. We love it. I’ve ordered food and
I’ve gone and just gotten popcorn. Service stops when the movie
starts, and they give you a final call. After that you can still
go to the lobby for food or refills.
This theatre is also limited to 21 and up. It’s so much cleaner
and quieter than any other theater I’ve ever been to. I don’t go
to movies often, but I won’t go anywhere else. (CineBistro
chain)

Of the two types of dinner theaters that I have been two before,
the one where you actually sat at a table was the one where you
were expected to eat. The movie theater nearest our house
converted to plush, stadium style seats that have individual
tables attached to each their, and at that one the movie goer
has the option to decide if they are getting a meal when they
get their ticket.

I've been to several of these "dinner and a movie" type
establishments.
Normally, if you are ordering a meal you do so before the movie
starts so the meal can be delivered without disruption. They
did offer popcorn, candy, and soft drinks as well. Once the
movie starts the servers do not enter the theater.

Alamo Draft House has this down to a science- and they really
cater to movie lovers. I’ve gone and ordered meals, gone and had
a drink or nothing. IMO, it’s not any more rude to not get food
there than to not get popcorn at a regular theater.
Man I miss the Drafthouse. Best milkshakes ever.

I prefer to only go to movies at the Alamo Drafthouse b/c they
are very strict about texting/using the phone during the movie.
I've gone and not ordered a thing. And I've gone and ordered
dinner.
Their "loaded fries" are to die for!

When I lived in Austin it was pretty much the only place I’d go
to see a movie.
