The next time that person asks for a "lift" I would be
       recommending "Lyft".
I have a friend who is constantly being asked by acquaintances
for rides to various activities she attends, and when she
complained about it for various reasons (one person lived way
out of the way, one never offered gas money, one was weird and
scared her with his behavior), I suggested she just say "No" or
"that won't be possible". I told her, you don't have to say yes
just because someone asks you for something. You don't have to
say yes just so people will think you're nice. You can be nice
and still say no and set boundaries with people.
And guess what, she did say No! I was very proud of her
polishing her spine and not doing something she didn't want to
do just because someone asked. She does give occasional rides
to other people when it works out but she doesn't feel so
       put-upon by the others anymore.
My personal view of rides is, I mostly don't ask for them for
myself. I would rather take Lyft or find some other way because
I don't like feeling that I'm inconveniencing someone else. I
don't mind giving a ride to people who appreciate it and who I
get along with. The behavior described by the OP would turn me
off immediately and that person would not get a second try.

I’ve almost always been the one being asked for “lifts,” and I
can tell you, I’m sick of it. Having to go out of one’s way,
dealing with sick and disorderly drunks, being stiffed on gas
money, having to put up with them either wanting to go home
early or late, etc. etc. I no longer offer, and if asked,
usually say something along the lines of “it won’t work for me.”

With Uber, Lyft, etc., there’s really no need for anyone to be
forced into chauffeur duty. So that’s what I now recommend.

Rides should be as easy as possible for the one doing the favor
(unless it's an emergency). They should be trying to please you
and not the other way around. He doesn't respect your time or
what you're doing for him. So stop. Demand respect. And gas
       money.
I'm speaking as someone who don't drive. If I can't afford gas,
I always at least return the favor by making baked goods or
babysit or something. I'm grateful for my rides and know they
are not here to cater to me. Their car, their rules.

       Next time:
       Can I have a lift?
"Can't sorry. See you at the party."

I don't drive at night, and haven't for about 10 years. There
is a woman who lives about 2 miles from me who goes to the same
monthly meetings I do, and she's been driving me there for the
past 2 years or so. We're friends outside of this group, and
when we do daytime things together I often pick her up and do
all the driving, which works out really well for both of us.
Plus, I occasionally buy her lunch.
Before that, the woman who drove me to these meetings lived
about 4 miles away. I would drive to her house (it was still
daylight), we'd go in her car to the meetings, and then I'd
drive home from her house (my night vision was a little better
then, especially for our back country road, which has almost no
traffic in the late evening). Same deal - I'd go places with
her during the day and I would do all the driving. Plus, I'd
occasionally get her a Starbucks gift card.

Speaking from experience, I will never, never be the person that
always says yes to giving a ride! I just recently came out of a
situation that I thought was only temporary, but it went on for
a damn year! Coworker's engine blew up and he was catching rides
from someone else, then that person left the company, and he
asked me if he could catch a ride; Sure no problem! He never
solved the problem of the blown up motor, because he had a
dependable ride! My hours were changed and I said the old "Won't
be possible". I never thought it would go on and on! Lesson
       learned!
