       Hero Worship
   DIR By: NyaChan

       ---------------------------------------------------------
Was in the vicinity of a conversation that got heated at work
and wanted to hear what the forum thought...
Bob who can be a bit of a blowhard was in a pattern of making
over the top compliments about an executive. Very talented
executive who makes all our jobs continue to exist, but it’s
overkill to the point of making me feel embarrassed for Bob when
he does it in front of our bosses. He had been monologuing a
bit on the subject while we were packing up for the day and a
coworker who is occasionally socially awkward smiled and said
“Sounds like you’ve got a case of hero worship there Bob.” And
thus began the most uncomfortable 20 minutes of office time I’ve
ever sat through as the conversation just went downhill.
I can add on how Bob responded, but I was curious to hear what
people thought of the coworker’s comment untainted by what later
transpired. Rude, condescending, light-hearted teasing? What’s
       your take?

It all depends on the people involved. Some people you can say
that to, some you can't. Personally, if I heard someone say
that I'd probably be thinking "Good for him for saying what
we've all been thinking!" because that kind of sucking up
really irritates me. But again, my take on it would depend on
       the people involved.

Depending on what Bob was saying, I would probably consider it
more brown-nosing than hero worship. If I felt the need to say
anything to Bob (because he had been going on and on and on) I
might have jokingly called it a bromance.

Though even if it was, that would be quite a neat way of
signalling to Bob that his praise was excessive without actually
calling it brown-nosing, which amounts to an accusation.

I think it's borderline but not actually rude. because there's
nothing particularly horrible about hero worship

Since OP said Bob says this stuff about an executive and not to
an executive, I wouldn't consider it brown nosing. And since the
executive does not appear to play a recipricopal role in the
relationship, it is not a bromance either.
I personally think the co0-worker did a service to Bob, making
him aware of how his repetitive compliments come across. Yes,
there will be a some awkwardness for a bit, but a bit of
discomfort is better and a year of co-workers rolling their eyes
at you and you not even realizing it.

The OP says he does this in front of their bosses, though, even
though it's not in front of the executive. It really sounds
       like sucking up to me.

Sounds like it was just a light-hearted comment. Not even
necessarily teasing or socially awkward. I'm guessing that Bob
       got defensive.
One thing about Bob though, he's smart enough to praise the
bosses even when they are not around.

I’m kind of relieved at the responses because I told coworker it
wasn’t that bad, but then I don’t much care for Bob so I
wondered if I steered coworker wrong. Bob actually steadily got
angrier and angrier. He initially had said that Executive is
the most brilliant Llama employed by this company by far in a
very dramatic manner. Company employs 1k+ Llamas and while
executive has the education, they have never actually been
worked as a llama, instead moving into an adjacent field where
       they experienced much success.
As Bob got angrier he started making sarcastic comments “well
clearly I’m wrong and executive doesn’t know what he is doing,
he’s just making it all up as he goes along”. Coworker keeps
just casually commenting, oh no, I’m sure he’s got great
research tee’d up for this project or oh that can’t be true -
why would you think that? Eventually my coworker (who was not
actually looking at Bob) glances up and saw red face and
clenched hands. Coworker then asked Bob if something was wrong.
It took a couple tries and Bob goes on a rant about how
coworker is offensive and insulting and how dare he say...”ugh I
won’t even repeat the words you used!” Cue clueless coworker:
“wait, what? Do you mean Hero worship??” Bob continued on his
rant and coworker gave a profuse apology, but Bob would not
accept and is currently not speaking to coworker. It is really
       uncomfortable.

Well Bob is obviously hoping to become the Head Drama Llama in
       your company.
I'd be giving him a very wide berth and only interacting on a
       professional basis.
And each time he tried to bring up Exec, I'd respond with "Yes,
we know your high opinion of Exec. Can we get back on topic?"
