Our land line is one digit off from the phone number of a local
pet hospital. Over the years we’ve gotten several ‘interesting’
calls. Here’s my favorite...
ME: Hello?
CALLER: You’re an Aunt!
ME: Excuse me?
CALLER (sounding quite hurt) : You asked to be alerted when
Fluffy had her kittens. She’s just had four.
ME: Oh, you want Dr. Fox. Her number is XXX-XXYX. Still,
Congratulations to you and Fluffy.

My parents' landline is very similar to the local bus line. Ex:
parents' phone is (570) 123-4567; bus is (570) 123-4657.
They regularly get calls asking if the busses are running on
time, etc. One person just couldn't believe that they were
dialing incorrectly. The final straw came when this person
called again during dinner hour. My dad answered the phone and
said "They're running 97 minutes late". Never heard from them
again.
When I was in junior/senior high school my father worked for a
heating company and had to be the "on call" person once per
month. Since I was the lightest sleeper in the family, the
extension phone was put in my room. If the call center called
dad I would go wake him up so he could take the call. One
morning, around 2 am, the phone rings so I answer it thinking
it's the call center. Here's the conversation:
Me (groggily): Hello?
Person: WHAT ARE YOU DOING UP AT THIS HOUR???!!!
Me: Excuse me? I wasn't awake until you called.
Person: Is this (rattles off completely different phone
number)?
Me: No!
They hung up. Not even an apology for waking up a 14-year-old
at 2 am.
