We had several with our last landline.
We were near a large city that had a different area code.
Except for the area code, our number was the same as the family
waiting room at large city's Children's Hospital. I always
explained that and gave callers the correct area code.
For the first 1 1/2 years, we would get robo calls from the
local high school telling us our son "Jeff" was absent from one
or more classes that day. I called to explain and was told they
could not remove the number without parental consent. Okay, I
get it. When I saw calls from that number, I would answer and
hang up right away. Then we got a call from Jeff's probation
officer who was assigned to the school. After I convinced him
that we don't have a son and we don't have a student in the
district, I explained the ongoing situation. He was a very nice
person and said he would be able to fix that for us. He must
have because we never again heard from the school.
I was woken at about 2 am by the phone ringing. The caller told
me that my cows were in his yard again and I better come get
them cuz they were shi**ing in his yard(there was a lot of
swearing involved). I told him he had a wrong number and hung
up. By the third call, I realized that it was most likely a
prank call (there was some laughing and other background sounds
and he sounded young), so i told him that isn't a cow shi**ing
in his his yard, it's his mother. Didn't hear from them again.

Before robocalls became the norm rather than the exception on my
landline, I used to enjoy talking to “wrong number” people. I’d
tell them, “well, you dialed the wrong number, and I’m in
city/state. What city were you calling?” A lot were from out
of state, so we’d chat about the weather, the cities/states we
lived in (never specifics), and local news. Mostly nice people,
usually off by a digit or the wrong area code.

I got this one on my landline yesterday.
The phone rings. I notice Caller ID states it is coming from Los
Angeles, CA- I live in Florida.
A lady asks in Spanish whether she can speak to “Azalea”
(similar name- will state why soon). I tell her she has the
wrong number. She apologizes and hangs up. I chuckle. I had
company so I did not ask what number she dialed or the sort- but
had I been home alone, I would likely have.
I do have a distant relative by the first name of the person the
caller asked for. However, we do not have the same surname. Plus
she does not live in my state- nor have we ever lived in the
same state at the same time. Finally, I doubt somebody all the
way from LA would be looking for her specifically, given the
fact that she is still a little girl!!!

Hadn't gotten one of these in a while, but I did a couple days
ago:
My cell phone rings. It shows a New York number. I answer it
because I was bored.
Person asks to speak to Anne Marie.
I tell them it is the wrong number.
Then the person asks if this is Circle K. I said no. Person
hangs up.
I looked up the local Circle K's. None of them have phone
numbers anywhere near close to mine.
I also looked up the New York area codes. None of them are just
one digit away from mine either. From the way the person asked,
it seems they were calling a work number instead of a personal
cell phone.
Gave me a much needed laugh!!!

I married a guy I'd met online. We got married in the States and
moved back to my home country of New Zealand. He'd only been in
the country 2 weeks and we were about to sit down to dinner when
the phone rang. He just heard my side of the conversation:
"sorry you have the wrong number"
"oh do you mean *Francis Newton*?"
"their number is 352 ****"
"any time, bye"
The caller had asked for *Francis* and the only person I knew by
that name was my best friend's mum. Hubby was blown away.

This happened to me several years ago and I posted about it on
my FB page. I'm in the US.
Over the course of the last four months or so I've gotten some
voicemails from someone that I don't know. He seems to be an
elderly gentleman with a thick Cajun accent. Yesterday he left a
long voicemail wishing someone a very Merry Christmas. Today, he
called again and I actually picked up the phone and was pretty
crabby when I told him that he's been calling the wrong number.
I said "I don't know who you're trying to reach, but I'm not
them". He hesitated and then said, sadly, "But she wrote down
the number for me" - and then asked if I was not 575-xxx-xxxx. I
realized what had happened. My area code is 757 and the rest of
the number matched. I felt bad for being so crabby and I told
him that he had the wrong area code (in a much nicer tone of
voice). I wished him a Merry Christmas, he did the same and we
said goodbye. I hope he was able to reach his friends today.
Merry Christmas, everyone.
He called me once more after that and I again reminded him about
the area code. I hope he's well.

I got one once when I was living in Glasgow Scotland. The caller
was very insistent to get a message through Brenda. Wouldn’t
believe that I didn’t know her and the message wouldn’t get
through. Luckily I had been living there a while, else I
wouldn’t have understood his thick accent.
My daughters cell phone number was owned by a computer repair
guy in another state, she got a lot of traffic at first.
On another less funny note my husband received an anonymous text
which said ‘You dint know me, but I’m having an affair with your
partner’. He thought it was hilarious and I reminded him I could
never fall in love with someone who couldn’t spell. But I did
think it was awful, some people could get into a lot of trouble
with a message like that.

When I lived in another state, I kept getting phone calls for
someone with the same last name. It kind of freaked me out when
my ex was deployed with the Navy, but I looked in the phone
book, and the other family still lived in the area with a
different number.

Not a wrong number, but an obscene phone call to my mom- my dad
was a long distance truck driver. If the phone rang in the
middle of the night, it meant he'd been in a wreck. Mom would
get up, throw up, and then answer the phone. Every time.
Mid 70's-phone rings at 3 AM. Mom rolls out of bed, throws up,
and answers the phone only to be on the receiving end of an
obscene phone call. When mom got a chance to get a word in, she
laid into him for at least 5 minutes about how he scared her
thinking her husband was hurt, and made her throw up, and woke
up her child (me, who was a teenager and had never heard my mom
use that language).
She hung up on him by slamming down the phone. It rang again,
mom grabbed it, and it was the caller from before, apologizing
to her for scaring her.

not my story but worth telling. Heard it on a "good old days"
kind of TV show from another New England state. This was back in
the days when towns still had switchboards, often in the
operator's home. Long distance would be station to station and
then the operator would connect to the correct person. So the
Boston operator rang up the very small town and asked to put
through a call to a John Morrill. The small town operator, who
was having a bridge game with her friends, answered and said,
There's no one in town by that name. Hung up and went back to
bridge. Same thing happened a few minutes later, same result. On
the third attempt, the small town operator got quite upset and
said loudly into the phone, "This is (town name) and we don't
have any Morrills here!" Then hung up, turned around and looked
at her shocked bridge club.
Also one from an elderly neighbor (in a small town) many years
ago. Her parents were living in the house next door (across from
me) and when she was a young married, she and her DH lived in NY
several hours away. She was going into the hospital for
something and wanted to talk to her mother one last time. Again
the operators were involved in making the call. The phone rang
and rang at her mom's house, no answer. Finally the small town
operator broke in and said, "Jane, is that you trying to reach
your mom? I just saw her going into the store" (next door to the
telephone company) "I'll ring her there." Which she did, much to
the amusement of the NY operator.
