I have stories! When I was about 16; I had someone decide to
just write down my number as a contact number. On their large
bank loan for a boat.
I kept getting calls from a collection agency for somebody who
was decidedly not me. Despite telling them multiple times that I
was not the person they were looking for and was not old enough
to borrow money for anything they just. would. not. stop. I was
getting really frustrated and my dad finally had enough because
he had overheard a call where I was polite but telling them to
please leave me alone. He called them back and told them to stop
harassing his 16 year old daughter and after that the calls
magically stopped.
Second story was around the same time. Someone from a university
in Florida was trying to reach another professor of something.
Left me numerous highly detailed messages. I was finally able to
answer and she was quite rude to me. I'm sitting there thinking
the voicemail greeting that was obviously not Dr So and So
should've been her first clue. To her credit she did stop
calling after that.

I do wonder what's the point of recording an outgoing message
that says who I am and to leave a message. People don't seem to
listen to it. I have had both messages for a doctor's office
(more than one patient too!) and from a dr's office, message for
a furniture store, etc.
Oh and I wrote earlier about having my number spoofed. It's
happening again, only now the spammer are using it directed at
people 2 time zones to the east of me. So the return calls are
coming rather early in the day (when I normally wouldn't be
getting any calls)

Ha! Yes! I once had a three-day-a-week admin job where there was
nobody else in the office. I recorded a very clear message
saying "If it's Thursday or Friday I'm not in the office today;
if it's Monday to Wednesday and you're hearing this message, I
must have stepped out briefly. Please DON'T JUST PUT THE PHONE
DOWN. Leave a message, and I'll get back to you a.s.a.p. when
I'm back in the office'.
Plenty of people just put the phone down, and I would come in to
the office to find three or four messages each containing just a
'harrumph!' The system didn't record caller numbers, so there
was nothing I could do for the callers. Well, OK, that was their
choice. But some of them would actually complain to my employer
'Aleko is so difficult to get hold of!' and I would reply 'Ask
her if she was the person who rang four times on Thursday and
Friday without leaving a message or even his name? Tell him it's
actually dead easy to get hold of Aleko, all he has to do is
leave his number and ask me to ring him back.'

Oh I had this too! And I did similar, saying if you don't leave
a message, I will not be able to return your call. Some people,
who actually listened and did leave a message, when I called
them back said "really? You have to tell people if they don't
leave a message you won't be able to call them back?" Yes,
really.

Our land line number is one off from a local animal hospital.
We would often get calls that went something like this...
ME: Hello.
CALLER: Congratulations! You’re an aunt!
ME: Excuse me?
CALLER: (crestfallen). I thought you wanted to know when Fluffy
had her kittens.
ME: Oh, you’ve reached the wrong number. The vet’s number is
XXYX not XXXX. Best wishes for Fluffy and her kittens.

One day many years ago I answered my home phone with "Hello,"
only to be greeted with a rousing rendition of "Happy Birthday
to you! Happy Birthday to you! Happy Birthday Dear
<Not-my-name>, Happy Birthday to you!"
After she was finished, I said, "I'm sorry - I think you have
the wrong number."
She replied, "What?! Why didn't you stop me?!" and hung up.

If you 'Bing' my work town's Post Office, you come up with my
work phone number and no, I don't work at the Post Office :D.
I get wrong number phone calls for the Post Office so often that
I wrote the Post Office number down by my phone and give it to
callers. And yes, I have contacted Bing multiple times about
fixing this, but no joy as of yet!

About ten years ago we had a wrong number that was quite sweet.
The caller sounded like an older Hispanic man and he wanted
Pablo. I gently told him that he had the wrong number. He
apologized and all seemed well.
About ten minutes later he called again. Again, he was told he
had the wrong number. We both laughed a little at the silly
mistake.
The phone rings again. I answer and there’s a few second gap
before I hear, ‘It’s me again.’
I assume he found Pablo’s correct number because we didn’t hear
from him again. Still, he seemed like a man I’d like to know.

My cousin recently got a job with the Water Department, in a
town I'll call Watertown, in Michigan (it really is Michigan).
A woman called in and wanted to turn on water service, and she
gave Hayley the address for her new house. Hayley looked all
over the maps they had. She consulted the street directories.
She doublechecked with the woman that she had the correct street
number and spelling of the street. She could not find it. The
woman became very irate. "How incompetent are you?"
Finally, Hayley turned to a coworker. "Listen, I am still
fairly new. Can you help me find this street?" Coworker has
been there for 20 years plus. She can't find it either and
admits she has never heard of this street.
They put the livid customer on speaker phone, and start
questioning her. What are the cross streets? Nope, can't find
them either. Coworker says, "Ma'am, are you sure this is in
Watertown?" After a few screams from the woman, coworker asks
for the zip code (that will determine is this is Watertown or
outside their jurisdiction).
Now, in Michigan, all zip codes start with 48. This woman
quotes a zip code that starts with 08.
There is a moment of stunned silence, and then coworker says,
"Ma'am, this is Watertown, Michigan. Where are you?"
"I'm in New Jersey!" Woman screams a few more times about how
incompetent they are, but probably more out of embarrassment,
and then hangs out.
When she told us the story, we all wondered how the woman never
noticed that wherever she got the phone number from would have
had to say which state (I googled the name of the town, and
there is one in almost every state), and that the area code (not
an 800 number) for a municipal office would be so totally
different from everything around. After all, the water
department would have a landline.

I was that customer once, though I didn't do any shouting, and
we both ended up laughing about it. I think I told this story on
the old site, but just in case.
I moved from California to Virginia, and ended up renting a
house on Florida St. in Virginia. It came time to have my Fios
line installed, so I contacted the place and they said they'd
send someone out one afternoon. So, I stayed home from work that
afternoon, and finally got a call from the installer,
complaining that he couldn't find my address. We went back and
forth for a while, since I was new to the area, and just kept
not-quite-connecting. He kept asking if I was close to the
beach. Well, kinda, I was about a mile from the Potomac, and
there's a beach there, but, huh?
After about 20 minutes, we finally figured out that he was in
the *state* of Florida, and was therefore a solid 900 miles away
from me. This made both of us giggle, and we agreed that he
wasn't going to be able to drive up and do the installation
*and* get the rest of his appointments done that afternoon. I
called and explained to dispatching, and got an apology and
someone out the next afternoon.

When I was a child In the 1950s, our phone number was one off
from a rather seedy bar. At the age of 12 I would be dong
homework at the kitchen table and getting calls from irate
women.
‘PUT JIM O’ROURKE ON THE PHONE RIGHT NOW!. I KNOW HE’S THERE!
I’m sorry, Ma’am but you’ve reached a residence.
‘B—-s—t! I KNOW HE”S THERE AND HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN HOME WITH
HIS PAYCHECK AN HOUR AGO!”
Why she thought a young girl would be answering the phone in a
place like that I didn’t want to think about.
It was time for Dad to take the phone and he could deal wit the
worst of them. Ooh, he could.
