       Public transit, or private shuttle?
       By: frog24 Date: July 25, 2018, 5:23 pm

       Hi All,
I've planned a trip for me and my daughter to a neighbouring
province and just need a titch of advice. To get from the
airport to our hotel, I can either take public transportation or
a shuttle bus (the hotel doesn't offer a free shuttle). The
time on the public bus is about 15 - 20 minutes longer than the
shuttle, but considerably cheaper. We're travelling during the
day, everyone speaks English, but it is still navigating an
       unfamiliar airport and city.
What say you, Brimstoners: would you go for public transit, or
       pay for the shuttle?

It would depend on the city, and if I had to transfer. If it's a
fairly safe city and I was comfortable with it, and not too much
luggage, I would take transit if I didn't have to transfer buses
and if I didn't have to walk more than a block or two with my
       luggage.

Would depend on the volume of luggage and the number of
transfers. If a straight shot and just one bag, I'd probably go
       for the public transport.

For me, it comes down to "how much luggage"? Plus, are you
confident in selecting the right bus line and the optimal stop?
Or does the transit stop pretty much "at the hotel"?
I wouldn't want to be carrying a bunch of luggage even a block
or two (though I have, more than once, and more than once been
dumped with the luggage while my companion went off to explore
the situation, so my perspective is a bit jaded).
How much is "considerably more" vs. the value of your time
(being able to start winding down from the trip, etc.)

It would probably be a good thing to contact your hotel and get
their suggestion. I would also like to ask how old your
daughter is. If she’s in her mid to late teens she should be
able to help with the schlepping of luggage. If she’s much
younger, the private shuttle might be a better choice than
       public transit.

How old is DD and can each of you handle at least your own
luggage & possibly help with the other person's - if need be?
If the shuttle is door to door - that might also be factored
into the decision - if the bus involves walking between a bus
stop either the arrival point or the destination, the less time
& distance spent walking around with your luggage, the less
hassle. Hassle is a factor to consider, along with safety, and
       cost.

DH & I always seem to be taking the MTA with 2 pieces of luggage
each when we visit DS & family in NYC. I joke that I get extra
points for the trips when I am feeling under the weather. Once
a local man made my day by praising me for traveling like a
       native.
You will have to decide time vs. money. Is taking the shuttle
worth forgoing a meal at a pricey restaurant you always wanted
to try? Do you have too much time the 1st day and a sense of
adventure to take the bus? Have fun and good luck whatever you
       decide.

Try Tripadvisor to see if anyone has posted about how good /
convenient / reliable the bus service is, how easy it is to find
the stop, etc. Often you'll find that people have, and it will
give you a good feel for whether it's worth paying extra. It's
also often possible to use Google Maps satellite view to
visually identify where to find the bus stop at the airport, and
see just what the walking route from wherever the bus stops to
       the hotel is like.
I did this recently when I took my 90-year-old father on holiday
to Split in Croatia. When we arrived we were besieged by taxi
drivers, but I had done this research and knew the regular
airport-to-harbour bus left from just in front of the airport,
and that there was just 7 minutes' walk along the seafront from
the terminus to our hotel. As we only had a cabin-sized trundle
apiece, and I had virtually 'walked' the route and was confident
of finding the way easily, it was a no-brainer.

I'll agree with everyone else and say to research your
particular situation. My DDs and I have visit FarAwayCity once
a year for their medical stuff. We used to take a shuttle
between the airport and our hotel, but eventually realized that
the transit route is easy and convenient, doesn't take that much
longer than the shuttle, and is actually less aggravating than
       waiting around for the shuttle.

You mention province, so I'm assuming you're in Canada.
If you're comfortable answering, what city are you travelling
to? There's probably someone on here that is familiar with the
       city and has personal experience.
