My rule of thumb is darkness. Once the sun starts to set and the
kids in the neighborhood can't ride their bikes anymore, anyone
knocking at my door will be considered suspicious and we don't
answer. Of course, expected guests are an exception.

We are in our summer season, so the days a pretty long.
Officially, the sun was probably set for both visitors, but
there was still some minimal light outside.
The sun rose today prior to 6am... just from my observations of
these neighbors, I do not think they would appreciate me
knocking that time to return the favor. :D

That really wouldn't work for me! In the summer, that can be as
late as 10:30-11 pm, and in winter as early as 4:30!

I leave my house usually before 6:30 am and go to bed around
9:30pm. By 9:45 I am typically asleep. Coming to my door that
late would be considered rude-- as I tell everyone I know my
schedule- simply because most I know are night owls. I have
told several "If you don't want me calling you as soon as I am
out the door= respect the fact that I have different hours"
Only in true emergencies do they take the risk. :) ( and no in
true emergencies I would not be upset)

I'm a night owl (DH is a morning person), but anyone knocking on
my door after 9pm would be ignored - that's too late to show up
and expect to visit with me. I'm happy to take a phone call up
to midnight, but that's not the same thing since I could be
happily chatting in my pjs with someone I wouldn't answer the
door to, if that makes sense.

I don't think it matters if you're up or not. Someone knocking
on the door at 9pm without calling first is a scary experience.
I wouldn't visit unexpectedly before 9am and after 7pm.

For me, 9 pm is really pushing the envelope. Early morning is a
little iffier. Too late on a weekday, and people are gone for
work. But too early, and you wake people up. Before 8 am is
just too early for my taste.
