How Late Is Too Late?

I admit, I am a morning person. Most people are appalled by what
time I wake in the morning. I live in a townhouse (so my
neighbors are very close), so I try to be respectful of the fact
that I appear to be the only one awake so early (ie. I don't
play loud music.) While I am a morning person, I do wind down
earlier than some (9:00pm is usually quiet TV time in my jammies
and I am usually in bed between 11:00pm and midnight.) The last
two Wednesday's, I have had a neighbor knock on my door after
9:00pm. It was a different neighbor each time and for lovely
reasons (one was sharing some homemade goodies and the other
invited me to a 4th of July fire), but I wondered why both these
happened so late. My lights were on (but I hate the dark), so
maybe they assumed that I was still awake and receiving guests.
I am wondering if my sense of time is off because I start the
day so early. So, how late is too late to knock on someone's
door? (And if you would like to throw out a bonus answer, how
early is too early?)

My DH is a very early riser, so if anyone knocked on our door
after 9 he would be irked too. However in general I think that
up to 9 pm is acceptable (later on weekends, maybe 10/10.30).
But only if there are lights on. In terms of too early - before
8 am would be poor manners (before 9 am on weekends).
I make the exception for weekends - by that I mean Friday &
Saturday night, Saturday and Sunday mornings - because most
people are not as rigid in their routines and like to stay up a
bit later and/or lie in a little.
Normally I wouldn't answer the door unless I knew who it was, or
if I was expecting someone. While I live in a relatively safe
and quiet little neighbourhood, I am both an introvert and wary
about strangers.

I'm a 9 to 9 type person. And even with that, I only call
between 9 and 10am or 8 to 9pm if it's important to get the info
to them at that time or if it's someone like my sister who I
know is ok with chatting earlier in the day. I also would not
knock on a neighbor's door before 9am or after 8pm unless it was
really something that couldn't wait till a later time.
But I think it's subjective to the area or environment. When I
was younger and living in an apartment that was mostly people in
their 20's/30's, lots were just starting their evenings at 9pm
so no one thought twice about calling or stopping by later in
the day. But by the same token, you wouldn't have knocked on
anyone's door before 11am on a Saturday or Sunday.

I wouldn't knock on someone's door for either of those reasons
after 7 pm (or before 8 am), but I'm also an extremely early
riser. I do best getting up at 5 am and going to bed at 9:30 pm.

Sounds like we're on the same schedule. I am up very early, but
don't go to bed until around 11 or later. I wouldn't be too
upset at someone at the door at 9, but definitely 10:00 and
later is too late. They probably did go by the fact that your
lights were on, which isn't unreasonable, though if it were me I
would have waited until morning to bring the cookies. Whether I
would answer the door or not would depend on whether or not they
rang the doorbell - the reason for that is that most people
can't seem to figure out the doorbell, or that I even have one,
so if the doorbell does ring, 99.9% of the time, it's my friends
who live nearby and I don't mind them seeing me in my pj's!

I think I'd be confused by someone ringing my bell out of the
blue after ~8-8:30. and I'm a late riser - it's just that by
then I'm in for the night, wearing pajamas, and not expecting to
be social. I try never to call anyone before 10am - even if
you're up earlier, I like to give people time to actually wake
up, get food, clear their head, etc. I personally would be woken
up by a call at 10, but I know I'm on the end of the bell curve
there.

Strangely enough Snack Neighbor did not ring the bell (which
everyone seems to use just fine and I believe is like the one at
his home.) I happened to be quietly watching a video and at
first thought the knock was a sound of the house settling, but
then thought I should check the door. I was rather surprised
that there was someone there! =)

We are four adults in my house now and each have different
schedules. That being said, in general I think before 8 a.m.
would be too early and after 9 p.m. too late. Someone is always
up before and after those times but my experience has been that
those times have mostly fit my varied life experiences; even
when I've had children or teens in the house.

I am the early bird that wakes up all of the early birds. On
workdays, I generally get up at 4am, usually earlier if the cat
decides it's feeding time. Therefore, I go to bed around 8pm,
or 7 if I'm especially tired. (ALL TV is watched on DVR - I
don't think I've sat through a commercial in years)
So.....granted, most everybody I know knows better than to call
me or knock on my door past 8pm, but if anybody does, they
usually get a very grumpy person on the other side.
I appreciate all of your owls who can take over the workload
when my brain shuts down early in the day.

We are morning people too. Mr. S gets up anywhere from 2:30 to
4:00 am. I'm up by 6 am at the very latest on weekdays. But I
have friends that are night owls. So I try to exercise caution
and not call after 8:30 or before 9 or 10 (depends on the
person). If our phone rings after 9, it's either emergency/bad
news or telemarketers. If I happen to answer and it's the
latter, they get a non-mannerly answer (sorry folks,
telemarketers don't deserve to get treated like other calls).
