Is this tacky?
By: jpcher Date: June 30, 2018, 9:01 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
I had a little dinner party last night (Friday) which included
my DD#2, her BFbob and BFbob's mother (BFbMom) and SO. BFbMom
brought a huge veggie tray. Home made style. Not one of those
prepared trays. It included, from what I could see, a chopped
head of broccoli, a small bag of baby carrots, a pack of grape
tomatoes, a couple of quartered zucchini sticks, some sliced
yellow/orange bell peppers along with a bowl of homemade ranch
dressing.
It was a lot for five people. I asked her if she wanted to bring
the leftovers home with her but she insisted that I keep it.
I love my fresh veggies but this is more than I could eat before
they start going bad. I separated the veggies into individual
baggies so that they would keep longer rather than staying
together on the tray.
Here's the tacky part of my question:
I'm invited over to BFbMom's home for a bbq on the Fourth of
July (five days later). I'm bringing an app, but I'm wondering
if it would be tacky or okay to bring over the left over veggies
as well? Of course I'll check them for freshness (not bringing
soggy, old veggies) and would provide a fresh dipping dressing.
I just just hate to see all those wonderful veggies go to waste.
Thoughts?

At the other site this topic came up about recycling food items
for potluck/pitch ins. The consensus seemed to be it was frowned
upon if the item was in it's original form...( If I turned a
leftover baguette into garlic croutons for a salad that is
altogether different). Because BFbMom brought these to you in
the first place I would be hesitant to take them back to an
event at her place. I know you don't want to see them go to
waste, but please either get fresh ones if you want to carry
some, or just go with your already planned appetizer.
It's been my experience that the peppers are going to get
slick, best term I can use, and after a few days the cut edges
of the broc. and the baby carrots with have a dry look about
them.
If you can't manage to use them yourself for dipping while they
are still fresh, , go ahead and make a nice stir fry with them
for dinner and leftovers for lunches. Stir fry the peppers and
zucchini with some onions, meat or not, and your favorite Asian
sauce. The broccoli simply steamed and seasoned with some sea
salt and a squeeze of lemon is really tasty. The carrots, can be
steamed and glazed with a little maple syrup, or Any and all of
the veg tossed with a little olive oil and spread out on a
baking sheet and roasted 400 degrees until tender are a
favorite at our house.

I definitely don’t think you should bring it to the potluck in
its original form... that’s sort of like regifting something to
the original giver. I’m with caroled: bring something else to
the party and turn the veggies into something new.
You can put pretty much everything into a curry or fritatta if
you like. You could also make ratatouille (or something similar)
with the savory fruits and something else with the broccoli (I
like it roasted).

I’m of the mind that if you have to ask, it’s best to not do it.
And the ideas above for using the veggies all sound yummy.

Use the leftover veggies in a quick stir-fry today. Freeze it if
you don't want to eat it just yet.
Take cut fruit or something equally as yummy for the 4th.

I am on the stir fry or freeze bandwagon too. That's just too
long to hold them anyway. I live alone, and I run into that all
the time - too much veg. in the package and I get sick of eating
it four days in a row!

I'm not much of a cook but if those veggies can be used to make
mini-quiches, maybe you can bring that to the bbq as an app.
Quiche can be served at room temperature.
But whatever you do with the veggies, I agree you shouldn't
bring them in it's original form.

I would not want to take a tray of veggies that had been cut up
for 5 days. No matter how well they are sealed there will be
some drying out after sitting out on the tray for multiple hours
(making, transport, and then eating at your house) and then
sitting in the fridge for 5 days.
Make a vegetable soup from the veggies and freeze.
Or take them and make a gazpacho to take over sans broccoli,
which you can blanch and freeze.
Or use the broccoli and squash to make mini quiches.

Excellent point, Hanna!
DD#2 solved the problem a different way . . . she made a new
tray with all of the veggies and took it over to a different
party that she was attending yesterday.
Darn! I was looking forward to some good stir-fry! ;D
caroled -- You made a lot of sense with your post, repurposing
the veggies instead of bringing back the same thing. Yes, it
would be like re-gifting.
Rose Red -- I really like the mini quiche idea. I'll keep this
in mind.
Hmmm -- The veggie soup was another great idea which I actually
thought about because I do have a nice bag of chicken bones in
my freezer waiting for just this opportunity.
I appreciate all of your responses!
Hope you all have a wonderful 4th of July Holiday!

I was thinking that maybe put them on a cookie sheet spray or
lightly cover with Olive oil and then bake under the broiler.
I’ve done this before it’s really yummy.
