       Arguing with the Flight Attendant
   DIR By: LurkingGurl
       Date: June 28, 2018, 1:22 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
This was in the news today. Several people were kicked off a
Delta Skywest flight over an argument with a flight attendant.
The passenger is claiming that the FA was racist because she
stood over the passenger to make sure that she turned airplane
       mode (AM) on.
The passenger also claims that the FA did not tell her before
that to put her phone on AM and that is where my sympathy for
her disappears. In the video, you can hear the FA tell her that
she considered the instructions given over the PA telling people
to put their phone on AM the "first time."
Also, anyone who has flown knows that when the doors of the
aircraft close, you are supposed to have it on AM.
Ok, so an argument ensued. But, what really floored me was this
       little tidbit:
"The man across the aisle who recorded the video stood up for
the woman and he, too, got kicked off the plane, along with his
young son and another woman a few rows ahead who asked the
flight attendant to sit down so they could all fly."
Are you kidding me? A passenger told the FA to sit down?!
Other news reports have said that the passenger was "very
polite" when she "asked the FA to sit down..." MOst omitted
what she said but pointed out that she was a Latina. So, I
guess the narrative was mean white FA kicked black woman and
Latina off the plane. No word on what race the guy was who took
the video who also got kicked off with this son after he got
involved and started arguing with her too!

It doesn't really matter how "polite" she said it, it wasn't her
place to tell the FA what to do. And while it may not seem that
the passenger who was originally at the heart of this was guilty
of behavior that should have gotten her thrown off the plane, I
think her response of arguing was stupid and ill-advised.

I've been mistreated by FA's before. On one flight, this FA had
it out for me--she was rude, and at the end of the flight, I
still had about a quarter inch of drink in my cup and was
drinking it. She stood over me and made a big deal about how
she was having to wait for me to finish my drink instead of
being available to serve other passengers and what if there was
an emergency and she couldn't respond because I was taking up
       her time.
But, I didn't argue with her. I said nothing at all. And when
I got off the plane, I filed a complaint with the airline.

I don't know why passengers think that they will "win." It's
definitely an imbalance in the etiquette exchange there but
       that's how it is.

While that FA definitely could have handled the situation
better, the passengers certainly could have.
       What do others think?

As far as I'm concerned, you don't argue with flight attendants.
You are 10,000 feet above the earth. If something goes wrong
they are the first people who will be there to help you. If you
feel you were treated rudely, you file a complaint with the
airline after your plane has safely landed.

I personally think the FA has forgotten they are also
responsible for providing customer service. We don't know how
agitated the discussion was between the FA and the woman prior
to the video. But her response to the man filming was really
unacceptable. I think I would have rallied the plane to request
this rude, probably overworked and unhelpful FA was removed from
the plane. I would not have trusted that she would put the care
of the passengers before herself if there was an emergency.

I have not seen or read about this but flight personnel rule in
the plane--and rightfully so. You are in the air or about to be
(or maybe just have been) and it is the flight personnel,
cockpit pilots and cabin flight attendants, who are charged with
making sure the flight is operated in a safe manner. In
emergencies, they are there to protect you--and making their job
harder by being a fricking asshole is something that you should
be arrested and charged for. Have a problem with that? Drive
yourself and that way the only person affected by your
       asshole-ness is you.
       All "you's" are general.

FA was rude. People arguing with her should choose their battles
better. Everyone who gets any news at all knows not to escalate
       confrontations with the flight crew.
By the way, I haven’t flown since 2004, am very good with using
my phone, and have no idea what "AM" means. I thought you just
go to settings and put it on airline mode, so maybe she didn’t
       understand.

I used AM as a short hand for airplane mode.

Bad idea. You would lose. If you were too successful in rallying
the other passengers, they would probably cancel the flight,
messing up plans for everyone on the plane, including business
travelers and people trying to make connecting flights. There
have been incidents of flights being canceled because of too
many passengers being disruptive. I understand how people feel.
There are times when FA's seem to overreact to people who argue
with them. I've seen youtubes of people being kicked off just
for questioning a decision that an airplane employee made.
However, the reality is that because of concerns about people
causing problems once the plane is in the air, in a disagreement
with an FA, you will lose. And you may cause delays or missed
       flights for other passengers.

You were missing one of these ]
If that gets moved or deleted, it swallows up your post into the
quote. I edited it for you. I've edited a couple of others.
       Common mishap. :)
