When You Are Home Working

I was not sure what folder to put this one in!
Yesterday, I was working from home (a perk that I really
appreciate and work hard to respect.) The company that sprays my
home for bugs announced a few days prior that they would be
making their quarterly visit on that day. I do not get to
schedule this and I am typically informed with less than a
week's notice that they are coming. However, the messages are
clear that I do not need to be home, as they will simply do the
spraying and charge the credit card that they have a file.
My question? Was I rude? I was home when the technician knocked,
but I knew who it was and was busy working, so I did not answer
the door and allowed him to do his thing. However, I have this
nagging feeling that I should have responded. I mean, the
interaction would have taken just a few minutes and it was
probably obvious that I was home (car was parked in front.) But
I really did not need to speak to him, so it would have been a
waste of both of our times. What do you think?

I frequently don't answer the door when I'm busy with LO. I have
always just figured they don't really care. They knock to be
polite and alert you, but if you don't answer they're able to
finish the job faster, which I figure is a win for them.

I agree that you don't need to answer your door in this case.
I'm usually home when my exterminator arrives so I greet him
when he knocks. But just because your vehicle is there doesn't
mean that someone is there too. You could have gone somewhere
in another vehicle. I feel sure the knock is just a required
politeness the company requires of it's employees.

did he come into your house?
because that makes a difference in what I'd do.
If he knocked and then came in to spray internally (like, if
they had a key or something), I think you should have called out
from your office, "Hi, I'm in here working," and then just kept
going.
If he only sprayed around the outside, I don't think you needed
to respond at all.

No, he did not come inside. That is one of the questions they
ask when you answer the door (do I want the inside sprayed) and
the email states that if I want that service that I should
contact them (I am assuming to ensure that someone will be home
during the appointment.)

No, he did not come inside. That is one of the questions they

Ah, if he wasn't coming inside then no, you do not need to
answer the door. Their knocking is more of a courtesy to you to
say "hey, we're here, and don't want to startle you if you see
someone moving around outside." Your not answering actually
saved the technician time.

Thanks everyone! I don't know why this suddenly started nagging
at me, but it sounds like I was not rude. At the time, I, too,
was thinking why not waste either of our times.
And I am grateful for courtesy knock. Last year they painted my
townhouse without informing any of the home owners. Don't get my
wrong, I am happy that they painted, but it felt awkward looking
out the upstairs window to realize that there was someone on the
roof who could see me in my jammies! I don't know what the
etiquette on shutting the blinds in someone's face is, but I
figured he didn't want to see either! :D I just wish the
association would have sent out an email informing us even if in
very general sense. "Division 8 will be painted sometime this
summer."

I have a similar service. I agree that the knock is a courtesy.
There are any number of reasons why you might not answer your
door. You could have been in the shower, bathing a baby, all
kinds of things. These guys go from house to house, they
understand that.
The knock is a courtesy so that you won't be caught off guard by
someone walking past your windows. I had some cable guys pull
that on me. I got up one morning and there was someone right at
my kitchen window, no notification at all. It was a yikes
moment.

You were fine. I might add that no matter why you're home, you
are under no obligation to answer a knock or a doorbell unless
you're expecting someone. Our doorbell broke years ago, and
we've never had it fixed because no one who ever rang it -
unless we were expecting them - had anything we ever wanted.
Unexpected package deliveries are always left at the door, along
with occasional unsolicited business cards for things we have no
interest in.

I work from home full time and never feel obligated to answer
the door when I'm busy. I don't think it's rude at all since I'm
not expecting anyone.
We got the Ring doorbell so I can see from my phone who is there
and if I want to speak to them I can do it right from the phone
through the doorbell. ;D
