to dampen the impact? Also, try to get some sleep whenever you
can. Being woken up frequently can really take a toll on our
mental and physical health.

people know you are in the market. Something unexpected like
long term housesitting or sharing a home with someone in
exchange for helping around their home might come along.

If that’s true, would you consider relocating?

These are all great suggestions OP. If a white noise machine
isn't feasible for whatever reason, I'd also suggest trying ear
plugs.
And it's obvious why the ants haven't re-appeared... they're
hiding from your crazy landlord!

You don’t set boundaries with other people, you set them with
yourself.

This is pretty profound!
I often say, "don't talk about your boundaries--live them." It's
similar, but maybe not as powerful as bopper's wording.
Other people aren't required to agree with you, and you can't
make them respect your boundaries.
So you have to set them, and then you enforce them by how you
control yourself.
Also, Anon4Now said "complicated it's not; the answer is clear."
This is also true. The answer is really simple: Move.
That doesn't make it easy. But it's actually simple.
Enacting it might not be simple (job hunting, roommate-situation
hunting, etc., involve many steps).
but the answer is simple, and it is clear.
Good luck!

Just want to signal-boost TootsNYC's comment: The answer is
simple. Easy? Not at all. But it's simple. And you can do it.
I know I've often gotten myself entangled because I couldn't let
go of the idea that "simple" and "easy" and "right" would all be
the same thing. Simple and right are sometimes the same, but
less often simple and easy. And in my experience, the easy
solution and the right solution are almost never the same thing.
That said - I know you can do what you need to do to get out of
there and find a better situation for yourself and your cat, OP.

Kittyfan, I was once in a pretty bad situation where the only
alternatives I had were completely, utterly unacceptable to me.
Eventually I had to choose one of those unacceptable
alternatives and it was hateful, but I was forced by
circumstances. I'm not saying that's necessarily going to happen
with you, but perhaps get yourself prepared mentally for if you
were forced to implement something you deem unacceptable or
impossible - ? I'm just being helpful, not criticising your life
choices. Or perhaps a lucky break will occur. Sometimes it
happens. Question: would you ever consider renting just a cheap
furnished room, until you can afford something better? Somewhere
that will take cats.
