This. Don't bother sending the letter you drafted. It's a waste
of time, and your landlord isn't going to care. Instead, you
need to get rid of the ants and deduct any costs from your rent.
In Australia, each state has a tenant's rights unions, who can
provide free legal advice and other resources. Not sure where
you are, but you could try Googling your state/region and
"tenant's rights".
(Also, try sprinkling talcum powder on the ants. I find that
usually does the trick.)

Another vote here for Terro ant bait, especially for indoor
ants. And yes, ants can bite, and I'm not talking about those
awful fire ants that are known for biting people. Here in So.
California we're overrun with Argentine ants which have moved
north from Argentina and, in some areas, even wiped out the
native ant population. During the summer pretty much everyone I
know gets at least 1 ant invasion. My MIL and I get bitten by
these ants, although they leave my husband alone.
I should buy Terro stock!

Dear Landlord
Last week I had a very disturbing experience at work. I started
a new job and when I went to give the HR person my
identification cards. I opened my purse when a swarm of ants
came running out of my purse and bit both her and the other
newly hired person two other people as well as myself.
Apparently, I left a few pieces of hard candy in my purse and
dozens of ants came into it to feed. Luckily, I explained that
the house that I was living in was infested and the HR person
understood.
I cannot leave dry cereal in its box because ants will get to
it. Neither Roommate A nor I can leave dry cat food out for any
length of time or it will be swarming with ants. I have never
lived in a house with this kind of problem before. Today, I
threw out a big box of dry cat treats because the ants got to
them as well. When I sleep the ants crawl on me and bite me. I
have also seen them on my cat as well.
In the last 43 years, I have never lived with a pest issue like
this. It is to the point where I fear that it may be a health
hazard to continue to live in these circumstances.
Roommate A, B and I have sprayed the interior of the house and
used ant bait traps. We also don’t leave food out nor do we
leave any dirty dishes in the sink.
As you can see from some of the photos there are ants on the
walls and A has pictures of them on the ceiling. I have also
observed them in the bathroom.
As we tenants have tried to remedy this situation to the best of
our abilities as renters it now becomes a landlord issue. Please
read the attached document page 4.
Please remedy this immediately. I believe that this may be a
health hazard.
You have spoken to me about being a good Christian in the past.
If you really are a good Christian then please do your duty to
us now.

Also good for instant death and wiping out scent trails is
Windex. I think it is the alcohol content. Mint keeps them out
also. My neighbor comes over and gets my mint (she has
permission) puts it in a pan with water, heats it into a "tea"
puts it in a spray bottle and sprays all around her house. It is
safe for children and animals.

I don't know if it works for Leftpondian ants, but European ants
greatly dislike orange oil. Sometimes in summer I have a problem
with ants marching in through my kitchen window. Obviously I
don't want to spray toxic chemicals around my kitchen surfaces,
but I find that painting orange oil along the windowsill keeps
them out, and smells nice too.

Mmmm! I love orange scent - I am going to have to remember this
one! I never knew they didn't like orange.

Update: Health inspector edition!
So I emailed my landlord pics of the ants and emailed him a copy
of his obligations to us as our landlord. He tried to call me
but I was too sick to answer. He didn't send out an exterminator
during the period that he should have done so by law. He also
refused to tell me what he wanted to tell me in an email.
So my roommates and I were talking last night and we (-I
thought) agreed to call the health inspector on him. So I called
the health inspector on him and made a complaint. Someone from
the health department called me back and told me that my
landlord was going to have a professional look at it and send
the health department a copy of the report that he will make.
Then my landlord called one of us and told us that there would
be someone that would be coming tomorrow morning which will be
August 18, 2018.
At least one of my roommates is angry with me right now because
I called the health inspector.
My landlord also wants to talk to me tonight.
I hope that I can get through this conversation in a
professional manner. Any advice for this evening's phone call
with the landlord?
I sudddenly feel very demoralized and down in the dumps. I am
also having a heck of a time trying to find a new place to live
in my budget for next month.

I have many questions.
Why is the roommate mad?
How could you call the health department yet be too sick to
answer the phone for your landlord?
How did landlord refuse to answer questions in writing?
My advice is to listen and not talk during the call.
Also to find ways to increase your income/ decrease other
spending so that you can afford a decent place to live.
If you are on Facebook there is a Dave Ramsey group there that
has many great ideas. Highly recommend Dave Ramsey’s financial
peace Univeristy, also.

Dear Blank
I think that it would be best for us to communicate in writing
in the future. In case there needs to be a legal resolution to
any disagreements that we may have in the future. On the basis
of some legal counsel that I have received, I think this is for
the best.
I have spoken to you about the ant problem on several occasions
as have the other tenants. They have also sent you photos of the
ants and video as well.
You should have dealt with this issue a long time ago. A
previous tenant So and So informed me of the ant problem while
she and I lived here under the same roof. She told me that she
had complained to you last summer about the ant problem. So you
have had plenty of time to resolve this issue.
Now that I have called the health department, I have heard a
second hand account from another roommate that you have called
"someone" and that they are coming "sometime" tomorrow.
I am very uncomfortable about this.
As you have not given me this information in writing with 24
hours advanced notice, it is within my legal rights to refuse
them entry to the property. -And you have had at least a year
that I know of to deal with this ant problem using a licensed
exterminator.
You do not have my legal permission to have this strange person
enter my home which includes the rest of the house as is written
into the landlord tenant agreement tomorrow.
If you wish to have this person inspect the outside of the house
tomorrow however then that they have my legal permission to do.
If you have simply informed me with 24 hours notice in writing
and identified this person as a licensed professional and a
description of the necessary activities on the property to
conduct an inspection according to our state protocols for pest
infestation inspections in the future.
