Just in case you do want a suggestion: Dawn Dishwashing Liquid
(blue). Mix with water and spray or sponge wherever they are. It
will not only kill them instantly but will wipe out their scent
trails. Do it wherever you see them and trace them back. Repeat
often. Your invasion sounds large so it might take weeks. But it
will work. Put everything in glass canning jars or the
refrigerator/freezer. Feed your cat and take up the food
quickly. Wash the floor with vinegar.

This is horrid. I'm so sorry you're dealing with it. I hope you
find somewhere new soon.
To your letter, you sounded really upset (understandably so) and
I'm only commenting because you asked for perspective; I write
angry and edit when I've regrouped. (My takeoff from
Hemmingway's "Write drunk, edit sober.") I wouldn't have noted
that I had candy in my purse because I'd be afraid he'd latch
onto that and try to turn it around on me.
If you have to correspond again, imagine that correspondence
being presented in court. (I hope you don't need to take that
route!)

I don't know what kind of ant baits you're using, but Terro
works really well (they're borax and sugar water, if you'd want
to try to make your own)

Terro had a version that included arsenic as well. DH and I were
given a bottle by my mother when we were newly married and
having an ant problem. I think she handed us her, mostly full,
bottle. It was so effective that we only used about 4 drops a
year. The ants would be gone in 1-2 days. We finally ran out and
bought a new bottle and, while still effective, it wasn't like
the first bottle. The ants flocked to the original formula would
gather around the dot for hours and then stagger off drunk on
it. (Yes, we watched them, it was pretty fascinating.) I called
the company to see what was going on and, after several minutes,
the customer service rep figured out that I had been using the
previous formula for fifteen years.
OP, I'd try the Terro, but with this problem, I think you should
find a formula with arsenic. Maybe try a home improvement store
and see if they can recommend a formula that has both boric acid
and arsenic.

I've found that flea and tick spray you spray on your pets works
too. Spray it on the ant, ant trails, etc, and they don't reuse
those trails, and the ones sprayed die almost immediately.

I useTerro ant baits every spring/summer when ants try to get
back in my condo. It wipes them out within a few days if you
place them properly-they need to be placed up against a wall or
under something where you see a lot of ant traffic. I always put
them by the seams in the wall/doors where they like to enter and
exit.

I've also had fabulous results with the terro ant killer. I use
the liquid inside the house, by just placing a few drops along
the ant trail for a few days, and placing their prefilled yard
staked around the outside of the house. It usually clears out
the worst of the ant problem in about 3 days.

OP, this is a horrible thing to have happen to you when starting
a new job.
I would remove any references to food. The state law should be
sufficient. I hope you, and your other roommates, are able to
find another place to live.

these are ants that BITE people?
Ants that swarm out of your purse and bite TWO people, instead
of just running away?
These are not normal ants.
I think you should talk to a tenants' rights lawyer, and figure
out how to send him a letter telling him that you will deduct
the cost of a professional exterminator from the rent.
