Do We Owe Fellow Travelers Our Seating Information?

Anyone who has ever flown Southwest Airlines (or do we have to
make up a ridiculous name for it? Purple People Eater
Airlines?) knows that everyone gets a number on their boarding
pass that tells them A) which boarding group they're in and B)
their number within the group.
I've been standing in line and had people ask me what my number
was and, although I've always told them, I kind of consider it
rude for them to ask but I can't put my finger on why I feel
that way. Are they asking because they suspect I may be trying
to board before I'm actually allowed to? So what if I were??
Are they boarding group police??? (for the record,
ladameestmorte never tries to board before her number indicates
that she should). Is this okay or should people mind their own
beeswax?

If you're already lined up and their number is close to yours,
they're just trying to figure out where to stand in relation to
you. (Oh, you're B21? Ok, I'm B23, I must be just back here.)
That's totally fine in my book.
Or if they lost track of who is boarding, then asking is fine.
Is that what happens to you? Or something else?

My best friend Nora and I have flown First Class or Business
class several times and we almost always get asked by someone or
told by someone -- usually a male in business casual type attire
-- "uhm, first class is boarding in this line."
Yes. Yes we know. We are traveling in jeans and fandom related
tshirts because it's comfortable and we are usually heading to
some sort of geek related event. We know we look young, but we
are both in our 40s. But we do belong here, thank you, and the
end of the line is right there.
We had one guy keep tossing us dirty looks in first class all
the way from Atlanta to Vegas once ::)

This. Most of the time they are just trying to figure out where
to stand.

I've never flown Southwest, but if people are supposed to line
up in order of their boarding pass zone, then I don't think it's
at all rude for another passenger to inquire, as they're
probably just trying to figure out where they're supposed to be
in the line.

I've gotten confused because the people crowding in the pathway
wasn't moving so I asked around what's up. Turned out people
were gathered close to the door and blocking the path when they
weren't suppose to line up yet. This despite announcements this
practice slows down everyone including yourself.
So maybe they're asking due to come kind of confusion.

As with the others, it's just to figure out their spot on the
queue. There isn't room for 5 people between the posts, and no
one wants to cut in front of someone else, but they don't want
to be shoved to the back because they were afraid to ask someone
in the queue what their number was.

If I am traveling with my mother, I put her into her position in
the que (and keep an eye on her to make sure that she stays in
it - she may be wearing her hearing aids - but she may not have
understood the information that came through them) before I get
into my own position.
I have had to get out of position to go get her when her
attention wanders - her attention span is shorter than it was
even ten years ago.

This sounds like a perfect reason for needing to board early.

Unfortunately, the sheer volume of gate lice at every single
boarding gate has basically made it necessary for everyone who
is in an earlier boarding group to systematically walk up and
down the line and ask people which group they're in. If everyone
would stay out of the way until it was their turn, it would make
life immensely easier and more efficient.
