I just had one for breakfast today!! Came out perfect. I break
them into a dish, but when I was little we had a set of egg
holders that were not juvenile at all. I have one now that is a
rabbit, but I use it to put my evening pills in when I take out
my pills in the AM. My kitchen seems to collect rabbits.
These are similar to the ones I had 50 years ago.

I grew up in Germany. They were definitely more an adult
breakfast food.
I think the reason why you don't find a lot of plain egg cups is
that usually people would have the matching ones from their
everyday china.

- And of course when a set of china just *happens* to include
egg cups as well as everything else, it likely won't come up
when you search specifically for "egg cups" because it won't be
tagged for that.
But there are plenty of plain egg cups around, and if their
everyday china set doesn't happen to feature egg cups, people
who just want something to eat their boiled eggs out of and
aren't too bothered what they look like, they just go to their
nearest kitchen shop or even large supermarket and there will
surely be at least one kind.

The painted designs on the cups look similar to what is on
Stangl pottery.

I've been on a big soft boiled egg kick lately! So much that I
recently ordered a little set off Amazon with two egg cups, two
little spoons, and a tool that you use to break the top of the
shell neatly without having to use a knife.

I got a couple of plain white egg cups at World Market a while
back. For me soft-boiled eggs tend to be a dinner thing rather
than breakfast. I generally have them with toast soldiers, fruit
of some sort, and tea. I work Sundays, so have a larger lunch
and then do this for dinner. It's a nice easy end to a busy day.
