       Soft Boiled Eggs
       By: jazzgirl205 Date: June 15, 2018, 8:36 pm

Dh and I have soft boiled eggs for breakfast twice a week. For
fun, I was browsing ebay looking at egg cups. Most of them
seemed designed to appeal to juveniles. Are soft boiled eggs
considered children's food in the UK and Europe?

       I can't say for others, but I'm a grown-up and personally, I
love soft boiled eggs. I also like coddled eggs.
I rarely make time to have them; I'll have to get on that.
I like soft boiled eggs broken over a handful of crackers in a
       bowl.
In fairness, though, I first had soft boiled eggs as an easy to
eat/digest dish as a child, when I was sick.

Question: Why does one need a cup to soft boil an egg? Doesn't
       the shell work?
I was watching an episode of America's Test Kitchen when they
were explaining how to make the perfect soft boiled eggs.
Wouldn't you know it, they were right?! ;) ;D I've
successfully, consistently made perfectly soft boiled eggs.
Their method is to bring 1/2" of water to a boil, then gently
put in the eggs (or use a steamer basket). Boil for exactly 6
1/2 minutes, then plunge into an cold water bath for 30 seconds.

The cups are to hold the cooked eggs in - you crack the top off
the egg, then scoop out the innards with a spoon, or dip your
toast in the runny yolk, then scoop out the rest with the spoon.

My mother fed me soft boiled eggs that were scraped into a bowl.
I always remembered it as egg soup. My easy to digest sick
       food was applesauce and toast.

I think the novelty items are a bit like mugs/teapots: I'm
guessing it's a cheap gift idea? You could buy one/several for
someone as joke/humorous present [like the cat-bum tea towel
       holder
  HTML https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=cat+bum+tea+towel+holder&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwj956SJtuLbAhVIKsAKHR1GCZYQ_AUICygC&biw=1265&bih=588<br
/>], whereas most people who want such an item (egg cup, tea tow
       el
holder) would probably buy the 'ordinary' version. I notice
eBay tends to have a lot of gimmicky items compared to what I
really want for some things. :-\
I have various 'normal' egg cups, so they are out there!

I'm not from Europe, but my mother hailed from Germany. When we
were growing up my mother served soft boiled eggs in cups
       similar to this:
  HTML http://mixedgreensblog.com/2009/04/09/seasons-eatings/a-good-egg/
Part of the fun, when I was a child, was perfecting the chopping
off of the top of the egg with a butter knife (as described in
the article). Sometimes we'd eat the egg directly from the shell
with a spoon or sometimes we'd turn the cup over and mix up the
egg for toast dipping. Is it a juvenile meal? I don't think so,
but it sure was fun! Haven't had soft boiled eggs in a while . .
. putting it on my next at home breakfast menu! ;D
When my DDs were younger I simply used a shot glass to hold the
       eggs. ::)
Oh! Look! A quick search on Amazon . . . don't know if UK is
       different:

I spent a couple of months in Germany in 1980 during college
(summer classes). I lived with a family and they served
soft-boiled eggs in egg cups. The Germans do breakfast right.

Okay, yes! Now I get what you're talking about. I had odd
visions of silicone things you crack the eggs into, then lower
the whole shebang into the boiling water to cook. I think they
have those for making poached eggs.
As for the egg cups, my parents have some that are a single
strand of metal that's coiled to be the base, narrow, then widen
to cradle the egg itself. Like this:

Many of the ones that are designed to be cute are used by
people, like me, to display their egg collection at Easter. I
have a huge selection of egg cups and many other small bowls
that I use to show off my eggs! Frog24, I have several like
those, some have colored metal, which is pretty.
