I am furious, Office gifts.

Crazy Carol has struck again.
Last night Carol texted me and said, "As I was walking out, I
was talking to Joe and he suggested that we all pitch in money
for thank you cards and gift certificates for 3 trainers"
I replied that I disagree.
She said, I'm all for getting something for trainer one, but I
don't care one way or another about trainer 2.(trainer 2 is of a
different race than we are.)She didn't mention trainer 3 at all.
I said, they get paid to teach us. I will go for a pot luck
though.
Her: I was also thinking there is a company policy about giving
monetary gifts. When it was mentioned a little red flag went up
and I thought hmmmm.
On to other babble about what to wear for graduation.
Today after lunch a email is sent to the group from Joe.
This is the gist of it,
Dear coworkers,
I am sure it has been a long 12 weeks for trainers, so we
thought everyone could pitch in 5 bucks for gift cards and
cards. Crazy Carol will be collecting the money and will have
the cards to sign.
Thanks,
Joe.
If it was Joe's idea, when is CC collecting the money and
getting the cards???
Something just feels so off to me!

I feel like I'm missing the back story here, but if it were me,
I'd just reply to Joe and Carol to say you won't be able to
participate. No explanation is needed, but if they ask, just
say you are not able to participate as much as needed.

Why does Carol want to get these people gifts? Are they doing
something above and beyond what they're being paid to do?

That would be my question, too. It sounds like they were paid to
do a job, did it, and now they're going elsewhere. I'd just not
participate and drop the rope.

I have no idea what she expects to gain. I already know I will
not be participating. I will bring something for the graduation
potluck. From everything we had learned in training, this is a
huge nono. And training is their job! They signed up for a 12
week class. I mean I am thankful for what they have taught us.
And not to mention the other trainer at all is disgusting. He
is the one she stalked on FB and discovered he is gay.
There is so much more that I can't say here, I can't because I
am just so flustered. I have caught this woman in more than one
lie in 12 weeks. She is the type that if you said it's raining
out, the sky is really dark, she would insist it's sunny and
bright.
maybe I'm just so pissed at how prejudiced she is.

I would definitely be annoyed at Carol's prejudice too. But it
sounds like Joe wants to get all three trainers gift cards and
thank-you cards? So despite Carol's personal views, the
workplace will effectively be treating all three trainers the
same.
Also, are these trainers who have come into your workplace,
worked alongside you for 3 months, taught you new skills, etc.
In my workplace, it would not be unusual to chip in to buy them
a "thank-you and farewell" card. (Although a gift card would be
a bit over the top).
That said, there is no obligation to chip in if you don't want
to. Provided you decline politely, you're all good!

Maybe. Hopefully. I'm a suspicious person and wonder why Carol
is picking up the gift cards instead of Joe who planned this
thing. What's she up to? Giving #2 & 3 blank gift cards? Leaving
them empty handed?
If it were me, I'd tell them I won't be participating in the
group gift and plan something on your own for all three of them
(cookies, appreciation letters, etc.). Or make a point of
publicly praising all three. This way, you won't get lumped into
whatever Carol is planning.
I don't really understand your job situation. Is she new like
you? Is this a new-hire training or something else? I can't
believe a long time employee's behavior is not noticed by
management.

Wait, this is buried in there, so I may be misunderstanding.
Is it against the rules at your workplace to give monetary
gifts? So they want to celebrate the end of training by giving
something that is effectively a monetary gift, and therefore
against the rules?
If that is accurate, I wouldn't touch this one with a 10-foot
pole. I would also be tempted to message the group with a
"remember our training? This is against the rules," message.
Tempted - whether I did or not would depend on the workplace
atmosphere.
