End of year gift for same teachers?
By: ilikeblue Date: June 7, 2018, 11:34 am

We're rapidly nearing the end of the school year. My DD is
finishing her second year of kindergarten (last year was junior
K, since she just missed the date cutoff), and they gave the JK
kids from last year a lot of continuity this year, so she's got
the same classroom and same two teachers as she did last year.
I do some quilting when I have time (ie, most of it was
pre-kid), and made each teacher a quilted tote/shopping bag last
year. It seems a bit overkill to do the same this year, since
I've already done that.
I don't need to quilt them anything, and at this point, I'm not
sure whether I have the time to really do something anyway, but
any suggestions? Gifts are mostly not really our thing. Last
month was teacher appreciation day, and we contributed to a
class gift of some hefty gift cards, so I'm not even sure I want
to do gift cards.
Books for the classroom? I'm a librarian; books are not a bad
choice.

DH was a high school teacher and I was an elementary school
librarian. Please, no mugs, as you seem to be leaning away from
anyway! Something consumable or something for the classroom is
best. A nice note written by the child is great. I used to print
out my children's words and let them copy it and decorate to
make a card.
The goal is to show appreciation but not burden someone with 30+
years of clutter. I am so glad you are doing that! And, yes, one
year I did make a teacher a quilted tote bag, which she needed
desperately!

When I was a kindergarten teacher, the gifts I liked were: a
nice travel mug for coffee (not the ceramic ones), a bottle of
wine, and a nice pen set of red pens for marking (if that is
what they use), or just a regular gift card could be nice.
That's so nice that you are getting them gifts :)

I think gift cards are great for teachers. I saw a teacher
friend post on FB last week that she was thrilled to get a few
Trader Joe's gift cards. When my kids were little, we'd often
give the movie theater card that included 2 tickets, 2 sodas,
and 2 popcorns.

Is not teacher appreciation day the end of year gift giving
time?
Since you have already contributed to a gift, why not have your
child make a card for the teacher?

I totally agree that there is no need to get another gift,
unless you want to. I also agree that something consumable is
best. I am not a school teacher, but a teacher of sorts and I
have too many coffee mugs, travel mugs, candles, lotions and
potions, and ornaments! My absolute favorite gift is always a
note letting me know that I have made a difference. Bonus points
if the child can have a hand in it. But if you really feel that
a material gift is necessary, my favorites tend to be gift
cards. More bonus points if it is to a store/shop that I use.

I don't think another gift card could possibly have a downside.
Even a small Dunkin' Donuts or Starbucks type of card would be a
nice token.
Or a gas card, or grocery card.

OP here. I'll definitely have the kiddo make cards for her
teachers. At mid-year, we made cookies and gave out little
baggies of cookies to all her teachers (PE, music, art, library,
as well as the classroom ones). Maybe something personal like
that would work if she's up for it. Great suggestions, thank
you, they've moved me out of the "ack, what do I do" rut and
into concrete ideas.

I have never rolled my eyes at cookies or any such treat. I will
never forget the year that a child brought me in fresh out of
the oven banana bread!!! I was trying to eat it on my drive home
without a knife! =P

Just a few weeks ago, we'd planned to make a banana cake after
school, and DD told her teacher, who made appropriate "yum"
noises, so the next morning we handed her a container with a
good sized piece of the cake.
