Suggestions for dyeing silk

I recently scored a pair of 100% silk pants at a thrift
store...for 3.00! I had been looking for some light weight
slacks for work. There is only one small issue. They are kind of
a muddy light brown. I usually don't wear that color, but I do
have some things I can wear with them if I have to. They are
listed as dry clean only, but I was wondering if anyone had ever
tried to dye silk like that. I would like to do a really dark
chocolate color. (For 3 bucks, I am willing to take risks!)
Suggestions for product, technique gratefully accepted!

A lot will depend on what type of silk it is. There is:
charmeuse, chiffon, shantung, organza, dupioni, silk gauze, raw
silk, silk noil, and many other weaves/treatments.
I have unsuccessfully, as well as successfully, been able to
dye some silks. In my case, a lot would depend on how well the
silk can be put in a dye bath, either hot or cold.
I have had my best success is using RIT dye, with a mordant of
vinegar and salt to set the dye.
I have heard that using Kool-Aid as a dye can be successful,
but I never got around to it, because I kept forgetting to buy
the Kool-Aid.

I've bought fabric dyes from both
HTML [url=http://"

"]Pro Chem and
HTML [url=http://"
HTML https://www.dharmatrading.com
"]Dharma
Trading. They have instructions on their websites.
RIT dye would be fine, too. I just don't ever see a good
selection of colors in the store.
