Could it be that he brings his mom along to make female riders
more comfortable that they won’t be raped etc? I know it had the
opposite effect on you, but I think it might be a possibility
that he thought this would put people at ease.

That’s plausible except I just don’t believe it was his Mom.

It's possible, but seems quite misguided to me. Anyone
requesting an Uber is presumably comfortable getting in a car
with a lone driver, since that is the norm and expectation, so
the people it would allegedly be to help would have already
opted out by choosing other transportation and be unaffected.
Others who are sensitive to that risk will likely be put more on
edge, since it's outside the norm and puts the rider at a
greater disadvantage in terms of numbers. The only way I could
see that strategy having the intended effect was if it was
advertised in advance when the person ordered the ride, which
would apparently not be permitted by Uber, even if it were
practically implementable in the app.
And for some people, like me, if a driver did advertise that
they brought a female passenger to make female customers feel
safer, I would consider it a red flag rather than a benefit. To
me, it would suggest that either something about this driver's
behavior was skeevy enough that he scared a lot of female
customers in the past or that the idea of harming his customers
was something he had considered doing, to the point of thinking
a chaperone was necessary. I realize that it could also be
someone genuinely well-intentioned, but the impression it would
leave with me would be "I thought about it and concluded I could
easily rape you. So instead of just not trying to rape you, like
most people, I brought a chaperone along to make you feel
better. She's female, so obviously you could not possibly be in
danger from her." Which would not leave me with good impressions
of the driver's judgement.

Maybe it's just me but I only use Uber as a very last resort. I
don't have a car and prefer official taxi cabs. I know they do
security checks on their drivers, unlike Uber. I seldom have a
problem with a cab except for one time (the driver was talking
on his phone) and reported it to the cab company and they took
my concerns seriously. I've heard too many horror stories about
Uber, not just about safety but about them not showing up and
charging you anyway. Plus where I live, a cab is about the same
amount as Uber so it's not really saving much money for me.

It’s the opposite where I live; cabs are unreliable. Sometimes
they just plain don’t show up. Other times they are impossible
to reach in the first place. And their vehicles are always in
bad repair.
Uber does criminal background checks on their drivers according
to their website. I definitely don’t trust our local cab
companies are doing that, given discussions I’ve had with a few
cab drivers about the ownership. Once I got in a cab here where
the seatbelts were missing. The driver told me he complained and
the the owner threatened to fire him. That was my last cab ride
in this town.
This was the first time I’ve had any complaint about uber and
I’m satisfied with how they handled it.

I was late to the Uber bandwagon but haven't had a bad
experience. But have had numerous ones with official taxis.
-One that spent a 1.5 hour ride where we were stuck in traffic
proselytizing even though I told him numerous times I did not
want to discuss religion. And even when I wouldn't answer he
just kept on talking.
-Going home from the airport at 1am, his cab breakdown on a
major freeway within the first 3 miles. He said he called his
company and they were sending out another. After 20 minutes I
asked what was up and he said I needed to be patient. I called
the cab company to find out that he wasn't really supposed to be
driving that car and he had called a buddy of his to bring
another car from a location over an hour away. I called cab
company to send me a cab and when the new cab arrived he refused
to allow me to get my luggage from the trunk unless I paid him
his fare. That stand off didn't end till the police I called
arrived.
-I've ridden in cabs in NYC, Chicago, DC, San Juan PR, Mexico
City, Santiago Chile, and a slew of other locations and they've
all been fine. After 3 horrendous trips in New Orleans, I will
never get into another cab in that city. They are worst drivers
and the dirtiest cars I've ever been in.
