Not exactly getting caught, but the food thief was
       inconvenienced.........
I read a story online [maybe on ehell] about a person whose hard
boiled eggs were regularly stolen. One day he/she brought raw
       eggs...........

My last job was at a small supermarket. Summer would be so busy
that we rarely had the opportunity to take our lunch breaks so
we were permitted to eat at the counter. My co worker was having
a salad when a customer leaned over and plucked a tomato and
cucumber out of it. She wound up throwing it away because she
had no idea where his hands had been. I once had to toss a
sandwich after some guy grabbed it and took a bite out of it.
       Some people.

This happened to a friend of mine. He had just picked up his
lunch from a small diner (not a fast food chain). The lunch was
a hamburger and fries, and he said this place made a great
hamburger and fries, hot juicy hamburger and hot crispy fries.
Just as he walked back into work, he was distracted by a
question. He set his lunch on his desk, and went to answer the
question. Five minutes later, he was back and his lunch was
gone. He was furious, and now in no mood to go out once again
to get a lunch. He satisfied himself with vending machine junk
       and stewed about it.
At 3:00 pm, a coworker brought back his lunch. Surprise! It
was a practical joke! The lunch wasn't even touched! Ha - ha!
Jeff took the lunch from the joker's hand and pitched it into
the garbage. "It's not cold and soggy," he told his startled
coworker. "It's no good, and you owe me a lunch that I can eat
       and at lunchtime too boot."
The coworker slunk off, and bought him lunch the next day.
       Never did that again.

I used to keep a 2-liter bottle of Diet Coke in the office
fridge for my afternoon caffeine fix (cheaper than vending
machine cans!). I labeled it and kept it tied up in a plastic
bag. I started to notice on many days that the level in the
bottle was lower than it should have been. I e-mailed HR,
saying (almost as a joke) that it was too bad we didn't have a
       spy cam in the kitchen.
A few days later, facilities put up a new clock in the kitchen.
Upon close inspection, we noticed that the loop of the 6
contained a camera, pointed toward the fridges. Wow, they took
       my suggestion!
The next time I noticed that my soda had been abducted, I
       emailed HR and told them.
Not long after, a member of the cleaning staff was fired. After
       that, my soda was safe.

Some companies take food thieves very seriously. They figure
that if an employee is stealing from coworkers, no matter how
small, that employee will also steal from the company.

We had an employee that took food out of the cafeteria without
paying for it. She was fired.
I was never sure if it was a mistake/brain fart as she claimed,
or someone my boss wanted to get rid of anyway and this was a
       good excuse.

That reminds me of the time the (full service) cafeteria forgot
to lock up a small fridge and a person got fired for taking a
bottle of juice after cafeteria hours and all their workers were
gone. Tried to say they were going to pay in the morning but
when they didn't even leave a note or told their
       supervisor............yeah

participants? Inquiring minds (well mine anyway) want to know!

It's a very long time ago now (worked here for over 20 years)
and I worked on a different floor to them (large law firm) but I
did know them by sight, I saw the email trail (it went around to
a lot of people) and I remember the firm-wide email that went
around afterwards... plus it wasn't just them who were let go -
some of the people who passed it outside of the firm got it
       too...
