Incorrect restaurant order--Do you point it out if you aren't
asking for a correction?

Question: If a restaurant (or other business that takes orders)
makes a mistake in your order but you don't want it corrected,
do you still mention the mistake so they're aware of it? What
circumstances would influence your decision?
Background:
Today I decided to go out for breakfast as a treat before
running some errands. The restaurant was reasonably busy, but
not slammed--I've seen it significantly busier. I ordered one of
their breakfast combos, which combines a serving of one of their
primary breakfast items (e.g., pancakes, french toast, etc.)
with eggs, a breakfast meat, and hash browns. So there are at
least three customer selections involved in defining the combo:
which main item (which may have its own options to specify), how
the eggs are cooked, and what type of meat. I noticed when I
ordered that the server didn't write anything down, and when a
different server brought my order to the table, it had fried
eggs instead of the scrambled eggs I ordered.
I like fried eggs well enough, so I had no desire to have them
remake the eggs, nor did I consider it a problem that I would
expect any compensation for other than a willingness to make and
bring the correct item if requested. However, I was torn as to
whether I should have mentioned that the order was incorrect, so
they would know their system wasn't working. It wasn't a problem
for me, but it did make the restaurant look sloppy, especially
since the server had chosen to rely on her memory rather than
taking the very normal step of writing the order down. Plus, I
know that there are other people who would have a problem with
their eggs being cooked wrong, especially given that they
brought runny-yolked eggs when what I ordered should have been
cooked through.
I chose not to say anything, since there was really nothing for
them to do to fix my order (I didn't want to wait for new eggs,
nor would I have wanted any sort of discount for such a minor
mistake). Also, the fact that the order was brought out by a
different person than the one who took the order probably would
have made that conversation even more awkward/confusing.
However, it kind of feels like that's setting them up to not
realize there's a problem until they mess up an order for a
customer who will actually be annoyed/inconvenienced by it,
which isn't a great outcome for anyone.
What do you think?

I would have said something as soon as she put it in front of
me. It sounds like you got someone else's order. She would have
had a chance to deliver it to the correct person.

I don't see anything wrong with asking them to correct the
order. I had the exact same problem a few months ago, they
changed out the eggs, and that was it! I didn't ask for a
discount, and they didn't offer one.

There's certainly nothing wrong with asking for an incorrect
order to be corrected. However, it's also understandable that OP
didn't feel like waiting for a replacement. I might have spoken
up immediately (thinking I got someone else's order) and then
assured them I didn't mind. I think after that it's hard to do
at the restaurant - they'll want to try to fix it (either by
replacing it, giving a discount, etc) and it could be awkward if
you weren't interested in those. Was there a feedback survey?
You could also e-mail the restauarant and assure them you
weren't seeking compensation but wanted them to know the not
writing the order down wasn't working. You might still get a
coupon.

I've had the same happen to me.
I ordered soft poached eggs and they were medium to hard. Didn't
realize until I cut into them. It wasn't a big deal but I did
mention it to my server. She apologized and offered to remake
them and I said not to bother, but just just to let the kitchen
know. With poached eggs, timing is important!
I certainly didn't expect any bill adjustment but she comped my
coffee that morning. I appreciated the good will gesture.
This was a cafe in my neighbourhood and I'm a regular customer.
I don't know if that was a factor.

I think I would have said something, as in, "Are you sure this
is my order? Because I ordered scrambled eggs." Not a really
big deal, but I usually do order scrambled eggs because I am
less likely to drip egg yolk on myself.

Your original question was, 'Do I mention it even if I don't
want it changed?' Yes, mention it.
I've done that before, usually with 'I wanted to let the kitchen
know, but I'm fine with it the way it is and don't need any kind
of refund.' I don't recall getting any kind of a refund, but
again, I'm fine with that.

I agree with this.
I'm personally a little uncomfortable with waitstaff who don't
write things down. I have no food allergies but I do have
aversions to certain things.

In this case, saying something would have been a benefit to the
restaurant, but not really OnyxBird. I probably would not have
said anything either, because then the "fuss" becomes too big
(because I will gladly eat the meal as is.) *Maybe* if someone
asked how my meal was, I *might* have mentioned that they were
the wrong eggs, but again, I prefer to avoid the fuss. I don't
think I'm being rude by not saying anything... nor do I think it
would be rude to do the opposite. (A few times I have discovered
something new through an error in my meal that I accepted.)
Fair or not fair, I would see this as a small ding for the
restaurant. You can get similar meals at lots of different
places, so when selecting next time, this *might* be taken into
consideration. (However, it is so minor that things like
location and value would probably be first on my mind.)

If you're happy enough to eat the food you got, I wouldn't
bother mentioning that it wasn't what you ordered unless it was
very different and might have been meant for someone else. Last
night at a restaurant we've been to a few times before I asked
that the salad dressing be on the side, but when we got the
salad the dressing was already mixed in. However, the reason I
wanted it on the side was because some places put too much
dressing on. In this instance, the amount of dressing was
perfect, so I didn't say a thing. It had been brought by
someone other than our waitress. After a minute the waitress
came by, apologized for the salad mistake, and offered to bring
us a new salad. I told her we were fine and that was the end of
that. However, if there had been too much dressing, I would
have refused to accept it or would have asked for a new salad
once I tasted it.
