Tap Water Rant

Our council has recently added chlorine to our water supply. The
problem is when you turn on your tap it smells like a public
swimming pool. I've been bringing home filtered water from work
for the rats and boiling and letting it sit overnight for the
cats, now we're buying bottled water for them. But for us, as
we're renting don't want to invest in a water filter for the
taps. It is so bad that we can't eat things like ramen noodles,
fortunately (for everyone around me) because I have a lot of
milk in my coffee I can't taste the chlorine.
Everything is effected by this, washing, hair, skin. Luckily we
don't suffer from skin conditions as people all over the city
are complaining of eczema flare ups. I just finished doing the
dishes and the water felt slimy and my hands stink. Last night
my husband filled a water bottle, left the lid off and twelve
hours later it still smelt the same so there goes the theory of
letting it sit. We've given up drinking water and are buying
soda as we're not keen on the taste of bottled water.
They chlorinated the water after the 2011 earthquakes for a
short period of time and we were advised to boil the water but
we couldn't smell or taste it.

Have they said why they are chlorinating? I hope people are
complaining - sounds like they are putting too much in. I live
in the country and so don't have to deal with that, but I sure
can smell the tap water when I go to town!

This sounds awful. Is this a permanent change? Is there some
authority you and your friends/neighbors can complain to? Can
you purchase some kind of water filter that goes into a pitcher
of water and doesn't attach to your taps? Perhaps your landlord
would be willing to pay for something for the taps? It is
possible they're putting too much chlorine in the water and will
reduce the amount - can you take a sample to the water authority
for testing? My brother lives in New York state (in the U.S.)
and their well water smells dreadfully of sulfur. However, if
you let it sit about 24 hours it is just fine. Good luck!

"In January, the council said it estimated that the chlorine
levels people can expect coming out of their taps as 0.2-0.5
parts per million (ppm). Mg per litre equates to ppm. The
information is still available on an archived version of the
website.
The current version of the council's website, however, shows
that the council has an agreement with the Drinking Water
Assessor to dose at a rate of 1 ppm after 60 seconds' contact
time. Public swimming pools are chlorinated between 1 and 3ppm."
The whole city is complaining and the mayor has said she will
look into dropping the levels but you know how slow councils
move. It is supposed to be for a year to get our water plants up
to standard although they now say 3 to 6 years to do the work.
"Water supplies at the city's 56 pump stations are being treated
while engineers carry out remedial work to fix sub-standard well
heads."
It took us a year to get the washing line our landlord promised
us would be in before we moved in. I'm not holding my breath for
the landlord to do anything, he lives in the North Island so may
not care.
I was just having a rant, the jug with a filter isn't practical
for us so I guess we'll keep buying bottled water & soda. I'm
sure the council will notice the increase in plastic bottles in
the recycling and then maybe decide to pull finger although I
won't hold my breath.

It sounds bad enough that may you could reconsider whether you
want to install a filter. You could perhaps uninstall it and
take it with you (they aren't permanent) at the end of your
lease.
How long are you likely to stay in this apartment?

Just under a year. We may have to look into it if its not
permanent. The house is about 80 years old with old taps,
hopefully we can find one that fits.

I have whanau in Hawkes Bay, who are experiencing similar
problems. They bought a couple of jugs from K Mart with a built
in filter. Which has solved the problem of drinking water.

It sounds like someone at the water treatment plant isn't doing
their job. My dad ran the water treatment plant at the
elementary school where he worked, and before he could run it,
he had to take classes and take and pass a test. He said, with
a new system, or addons, there would have to be more chlorine
added for a few days until the system was sterilized. Then the
amount of chlorine could be dropped to the recommended level for
the system or even a bit lower. Also, someone would come in to
test the water and told him he was doing it right. This person
told Dad that often the operators would just dump the chlorine
in without measuring, which meant foul tasting water even at the
end of the water lines.
Dad said you should barely be able to taste the chlorine. When
we went out to eat, he would sniff and taste the water and be
able to tell how much chlorine was in the water and if it were
too much or just right, usually too much. As for letting the
water sit out, over night should do it, however, the more
surface area exposed, the faster it will clear out. Could there
be other things being added to the water also? Maybe having
your tap water tested will help. Then go to your local news
media and see if they will help you if complaints by you and
others on this system to your council are ineffective.
I live in the country and have good well water. I just can't
stand chlorinated town/city water. Yuck! Good luck in getting
this situation resolved.

The Brita filter says it gets out chlorine. If you don't have
counter space for that, they make water bottles with Brita
filters that you drink out of directly and they have small ones
that only filter a couple of cups at a time.
Chlorine at swimming pool levels, yuck! Hugs!
