Instead of memory-of-an-elephant playing-in-the-band, it could
be memory of an-elephant-playing-in-the-band? If I've managed
to convey what I'm trying to say, that makes at least as much
sense as any other interpretation.

Just to nitpick: no, it doesn't, because the ballad of Sir
Patrick Spens contains no such line. (His ship sank, and his

The ballad you're thinking of is 'The Bonny Earl o' Moray',
which begins:
'Ye Hielands and ye Lowlands,
O where hae ye been?
They have slain the Earl o' Moray
And laid him on the green.'

This one's pretty specific - I'm probably the only person who
hears this.
Scar Tissue by The Red Hot Chili Peppers has the line, "With the
birds I'll share this lonely viewin'" I invariably hear this as,
"With the Burgess Shale is a lonely view".
Note: the Burgess Shale is a large fossil deposit from about 500
million years ago in British Colombia. It has one of the best
records of the "Cambrian Explosion" in the diversity of marine
animals.

I'm not sure what became of him but Rob Carlson was a local who
got his start in musical parody by writing and singing them for
a radio station in the area. His Number One Hit was, in fact,
"There's a Bathroom on the Right" and it sounds pretty much like
what you would expect. (Hysterically funny.) "You feel your
bladder overflowin, you know it's time for you to go..." His
ability to sound like the people he was parodying was amazing.
Most of his other songs weren't based on mondogreens. He just
chose the best music to fit the topic. One of his best was Bob
Dylan's "Let's Get Stoned" with lyrics about then DC Mayor
Barry whose addictions were oh so well known.
