For wedding gifts, a friend of mine usually gives the Happy
Couple a bug zapper. The HC is always amused and pleased.

I once gave, as a bridal shower present, one of those Sentry
fire-safe boxes. Everyone at the shower was VERY impressed with
how useful and thoughtful.
(I'd gotten it as a public-relations submission at the office of
the publication I was working on.)

DH and I bought a house the month before we were married.
His work buddies got together and gifted us a lawn mower as a
wedding gift!

A friend was very tickled with the shower gift of a decorative
box to be mounted in the kitchen. Set up to hold a fire
extinguisher, included in the gift.

Just remembered - when I got married over four decades ago, my
coworkers at a retail store (small chain - no longer in
existence) got together and bought me an ironing board.
I used that thing for longer than I like to admit, even using a
bolt to put one "foot" back together after it fell. In fact, I
pulled out DD's ironing board when staying at her house a month
ago...and I'd swear it was *that* same ironing board, because it
had the bolt holding on the foot...
I sew and I use an ironing board a lot to press out seams as I
sew - that ironing board got used to make a pale yellow linen
blouse for my mother to wear to the Georgia Renaissance Festival
last month. I did use DD's iron - which is not forty plus years
old - probably a bit over twelve years old, as I remember buying
it while I was still living in Georgia while prepping the house
for sale and left the then-new iron and the ironing board for
her, if she wanted/needed them.

I got invited to a wedding where the couple had registered at
Home Depot. That was fun. I gave them a 100-foot quality
garden hose.

Many years ago, DH and I spent a day shopping with some friends
who were about to get married. In one store, the bride saw a
Menorah that she loved. The groom basically told her that maybe
someday, but they couldn't buy it while preparing for the
wedding. Later DH and I went back and got it, as it was truly a
piece of art, and one of a kind, so we knew if it wasn't
purchased quickly, it would be gone.
The night of the wedding, at an ungodly hour, they called to
tell us thank you and they were crying. I didn't even mind being
woken up, as they were so overjoyed! Best gift I have ever given
to a bride and groom.

My most memorable wedding gift was an antique sterling silver
fruit bowl. A week and a half before the wedding, my fiancé
called it off. Mama and I loaded up all the gifts and personally
returned them. The elderly lady who gave me the bowl refused to
take it back. "Remember the story of Joseph," she said. "When
his brothers sold him into slavery in Egypt, he thought his life
was over. But God had other plans and it was the beginning of
something wonderful and much better. So it will be for you.
Keep the bowl and let it be a reminder that the best is yet to
come."
I married a man who was crazy about me and vice versa. It has
been over 30 years and every single day I thank God that fiancé
#1 had the courage to back out. I now know that it would not
have worked and I would not have been anywhere near as happy as
I am today. Whenever I was down or felt rejected, I looked at
that bowl and it strengthened my faith that the best was yet to
come.

Aaaaand now I'm crying at work. ;)
Thank you for sharing this story - it totally made my day.

My great aunt told my cousin, another one of her nieces not her
daughter, that she could not come to my wedding empty handed.
Cousin and her husband didn't have a lot of money and I honestly
wouldn't have thought about it if they didn't bring a gift. But,
when GA told her that, cousin crocheted some lovely dish
clothes. I still have them 26 years later and they're going
strong. They've left all the other wedding towels, sheets, etc.
in the dust. I'm seeing cousin this weekend and this thread just
reminded me that I should tell her that.

. . . cousin crocheted some lovely dish clothes. . . .

I was trying to figure out what dish clothes were. Have my
dishes been unclothed all these years? ;D Then I concluded you
probably meant "dish cloths".
Am I right? If not, what are dish clothes? And do I need to
get some?

I kind of had that picture in my mind too when I first read it!
It was amusing to think of the plates dancing off in
dresses...[emoji6]
