Mistaken Identity
By: DaDancingPsych Date: May 25, 2018, 7:37 am
---------------------------------------------------------
Oh boy... Facebook etiquette time!
I met Angie probably two months ago when she was in town for a
large dancing event. Our interactions were brief, but pleasant,
so when she attempted to friend me on Facebook, I accepted.
Angie returned to our city for unrelated matters, but did drop
into one of our weekly dancing events. I did say hello and
chatted with her a bit.
Angie posted a few pictures from her trip on Facebook the next
day and the following paraphrased conversation occurred below
the pictures.
DDP: It was really nice to see you again; it looks like you had
a great trip!
Angie: I did! I almost forgot to post the pictures of us!!!
(This seemed odd to me, as I did not recall taking any pictures
with Angie, but it is not uncommon for someone to take some of
people dancing, so I figured that is what she had.)
DDP: Most people don't tag me, because I am not all that
photogenic.
Angie: I LOVE our selfies together.
And before I could even try to figure out what selfie I took
with her, I received a notification that I was tagged in
approximately 20 selfies. The problem? All of the pictures are
of Angie and Brenda (not me). She apparently has me confused.
What is the best way to tell Angie that I am not Brenda? I felt
funny just announcing it, because it is obvious that the two of
them spent much more time together and got along really well. I
did not want to embarrass Angie, but I also feel weird that I am
tagged in so many photos that are certainly not me.
Do you have any thoughts on how to most graciously handle
incorrectly tagged photos?

I'd untag yourself on the pictures and send s PM with. " Hi, I
think you clicked the wrong name when you were tagging your
photos. I think you meant to tag Breanda. Have a great weekend."

I like this. Calling it an accident gives her a way to "save
face."

The was my solution also, untag quickly and then PM her. On the
"quickly" part, you want to disconnect your name from Brenda's
image in case it populates to Google images or another such
site. Also, you don't want FB making that connection and giving
Brenda as a suggestion to friends tagging you. (Although they
should know the difference and not to select Brenda.)

Thanks everyone! This was such a great, simple answer to what I
was blowing up as a big issue. I did as suggested and everything
seems to have worked out well.

Is there a reason that I should have been anxious to quickly
separate my name from the photos? They were goofy, but not
really embarrassing. Brenda (and Angie, too) are both stunningly
beautiful, so I would not be all too upset to be mistaken for
either of them. I am just curious if there is a reason that I am
unaware of that I should be concerned with.
Thanks!

I believe it has to do with face recognition technology. It will
recognize her face to your name eventually and offer it as a
suggestion. I think. But that may be more annoying to her and
her friends than it might be to you.

Yes, and I mentioned quickly because I could see it escalating
into a comedy of errors. So, the technology links your name with
that face and one of her friends posts a pic, FB makes the
suggestion and she just clicks the first one because the first
one is typically the correct one, then it reinforces the process
and you have one more to correct.
It was more about getting in front of something than it being
alarming to be linked to her. (I hope that makes sense??)

Yes, that does make sense! Thank you for the explanation. Call
me old school, but I am not sure that I like that the technology
world can identify my face, so I am fine with it being confused!
=P But I appreciate the knowledge!
