..snip
In other news, I did finish binding the one baby quilt - the
quilt was made quite a while ago. I measured first, and I
thought I had enough. I didn't allow enough for the joins! I
should have joined them square instead of on an angle as that
would have given me enough. How short was it? about 2 inches! I
managed to salvage some scraps - we're talking triangles that
were about an inch and a half - and sewed them together and
joined it all in. Thankfully, the kid won't care. It's hardly
noticeable, and I think when I machine sew the second side, it
will be even less so.

Amazing save! Good for you! (And a good cautionary story for
me!)
[/quote]
Okay, you do NOT want to hear what I did to the second baby
quilt... wah!!
I am going to tell you anyway! LOL! I got the length right,
2.5", as I was figuring out how many 9-patch squares could be
made. So, tell me why oh WHY did I cut the strips only 1.5 in
width? I couldn't figure out why I seemed to be getting so many
more strips than I had anticipated, and I didn't twig to what I
had done until I went to sew the first 9-patch together. Sigh...
Since I was using scraps, I don't have enough of these colours
to re-do it, so I will have to see what I can come up with what
I have, especially as I didn't really have quite enough to
finish the quilt anyway!
Having said all that, I do have a lovely fat quarter baby pack
but I didn't want to use it yet. Oh well.
(edited to correct - I miscut them 1.5, not 2.5! 2.5" would have
been good...)

An update on the recycled denim quilt that I'm making for DGD: I
started sewing the rows together today. I have got the first 5
rows sewn together and so far, it is all good! The heat wave
broke last night, so I got the first 6 rows pressed and ready to
be worked on today.
I'm currently waiting for my younger sister to come and get me;
we're going to go work out together at her gym. When I get back,
I'll sew the sixth row on and then wait until it is cool enough
to press some more rows. Bit by bit, it is coming together!

Houston has been "too darned hot" (if you remember the tap
dancing musical number in Kiss Me, Kate - think a rather wilted
looking VorFemme sitting under a ceiling fan and doing the same
number in a loose dress - not a leotard & tights - but talking
on tone like Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady - it's too darned hot
to tap dance & sing, even if I could tap dance). Instead of
sewing, I'm taking siestas in the afternoon and working on
inventorying my sewing pattern "collection" (sounds so much more
elegant than "my piles of patterns", doesn't it?). I have
duplicates of a few patterns...I must have liked them a lot - at
least I would have bought them "on sale" instead of full price.
If anyone is looking for patterns - send me a description & I'll
check - an older vest & skirt pattern is going to my mother so
she can figure out how to add short sleeves to it to get a
"weskit" for summer wear.
I have applique patterns, curtains, doll dresses, a few "home
décor" patterns with quilts & bed skirts as well as curtains &
valances, compute totes, and more Misses & Womens patterns than
you can shake a stick at - over 200 and still adding the Stretch
& Sew and Kwik Sew patterns, costume patterns, patterns for men,
boys, youth, teens, and girls - as well as toys & dolls). More
costumes than anything else...
I need to sort out the ones that I don't want to or don't plan
to keep - but not until I finish the data entry.
So many things started and set aside as the summer has gotten
hotter...

I now have 12 (of 16) rows done on the denim quilt for DGD! The
top should be done by Sunday. GDG got to see it tonight and she
loves it!

Yesterday, I got the call from the sewing machine repair guy,
asking a couple of questions as to what happened & where the
impact was on the machine. It turned out that I got lucky I was
sitting down on a carpeted floor with a wooden sub floor instead
of standing up downstairs on a tile floor...or, (whisper it with
dread) dropping it on the stairs so that it keeps on falling....
It happened at a quilt show...the lady was devastated. And the
repair shop in the local community got a wonderfully heartfelt
testimonial when they managed to put *Humpty Dumpty* back
together again and got it running! It was going to be ready to
pick up in half the promised time and cost half of the "desk
charge" since it was a relatively simple fix, no parts needed.
In short, it would be ready after 2 pm. I fed my husband,
grabbed the adult son to do the heavy lifting, and went to a
Whataburger near the repair place for lunch with hime (in Katy -
for those in the Houston area) - then we went to pick it up (two
blocks) & drove home...and I was a bit nervous until he got to
the top of the stairs at our house.
I promptly finished cleaning it on the sewing desk, oiled it,
and worked on balancing the tensions of the bobbin & spool using
two colors of thread (one top and one bottom) so that it makes a
secure lock stitch.
I learned that you need to make very, very sure that both spool
and bobbin are using the same weight/thickness of thread if you
are using two different colors...
And then I took a strip of denim and ran up a "stitch sampler"
to see how the schematic/icon compares to the appearance of the
actual thread on fabric stitch. I'm sort of having fun - even
if nothing is getting finished that is going to be wearable!

Ah, but your baby is home where she belongs! And kudos to your
son for doing the heavy lifting!
