The flat discs have the same # and schematic of the stitch
design on them that the top hats do - they will store in less
space due to being flat. I have no idea which design came first
- I do remember seeing two other designs, some of them in
different colors as well as slightly different shapes, for other
brands of sewing machines. But I never owned one of those
machines...either new or used.
VorFemme, So are both types usable in your machine? That would
be amazing, as it would mean that I should try to see if both
would work in mine!
No - I've seen both types for sale on eBay, as well as Necchi
and Kenmore discs - possibly some others, but they won't work in
my machine, only the flat ones will that are Singer or Simanco.
I do have some duplicates...sorry, I didn't think that I'd
written that so as to make it look like both would work - they
are for different types of Singer sewing machines - different
model numbers. I think that the top hat discs were made for a
series of slant needle machines - which move the location where
stitches form forward a bit, making it easier to see for some
people. I find that sometimes the type machine that you learned
on is your favorite and sometimes changing types can make it a
little easier for other people. It just depends on what works
best for YOU and your preferences & mind set.
Kind of like tea & coffee, chocolate & vanilla, or other
personal preferences.

My first machine was a Singer Touch and Sew. It had a drop in
bobbin and the bobbin was filled in place. So I never had to
learn to fill a bobbin.(I know own a Sidewinder to fill my
bobbins and I love it!) It used the top hat cams. When that
machine gave up the ghost, I gave my sewing machine guy the
machine and all the rest of the stuff so he could use the parts.
I wish I had not given him the cams. There was one that I really
wish I had, it was a line of ducks. So cute for baby gifts. Two
machines later (one was an older Singer that my friend gave me
as I do her mending for her anyway and one was a brand-new
Brother that was a piece of trash) I went back to my guy and
bought the Singer I'm currently using. I love it! DH also bought
me a new Brother based on my mother's recommendation and she's
teaching me to use it.

Today DGD came over to show us her pink (!) hair, which looks
great, by the way. And while she was here, I got her to look at
button options for a shirt that she bought at the thrift store,
that was missing a button. She looked at the options and choose
the easiest one1 So I did that while she was here and she took
it with her when she left. She also took all four of the laundry
bags, two for her, one for her college roommate, and one for the
young man that has been her best friend since kindergarten. She
was very pleased with them, so that made me happy. Also we laid
out the rows of the denim quilt I'm making for her, so she could
see them. She loved everything about them and seemed so excited!
Today was a good day to be a grandma!

I had a Singer Touch and Sew for a while, it was one of two - I
got it for the ducks, hounds, and some other design built
in...trains? No cams but it sewed that same row of ducks.
About the time VorSon outgrew ducks (2 and a half) we got orders
from the military to move, I found a Kenmore on the clearance
table that sewed 60 or so stitches & had two outine fonts, and
VorGuy told me that the next sewing room would not have room for
three sewing machines and a serger. I sold the Singer and a
simpler 12 stitch Kenmore to pare down the stuff in the sewing
room to fit a breakfast nook sized sewing room.
I did get a cutting table once we got to the new house. I still
have it some twenty years later...some things are too useful not
to keep.

Today I had to take the sewing machine and serger off of the
table, so we can host our DS and his family for dinner. Since I
got the table cleared off, I quickly laid out the fabric and
pattern to make my friend a pair of lounging pants. Now when I
put the machines back up, I'll be able to sew it up for her! It
isn't a birthday or Christmas gift, so whenever it gets finished
is the right time!

I had two bias tape makers show up today - I am going to make
several peasant blouses (see the Clara peasant blouse on
Fabrics-Store.com) and I need bias for all of the copies. I did
ONE at DD's house without any of these at all - but when I got
home, I found that I only had one that made a size of bias tape
that is NOT on the list of sizes needed. I don't feel like
doing the job of making six or seven yards of bias tape in
different widths with only my own, rapidly singing fingers to
work with while I use my steam iron as the final step. I
haven't decided if I'm making one of these for me, too, or
trying a different pattern (I have never used the peasant blouse
from HotPatterns.com - but I found a ready-to-wear version in a
lovely purple that I like a lot - I want more copies - this
version has the advantage of not needing a lot of bias tape, but
Mom gets the style that she likes better). She did arrange for
my sewing lessons - back when I was a much younger VorFemme.

WOO HOO!! Block 12 is done done done!!! Now I have to set it all
aside for a little while as I have a couple of time-sensitive
projects to get done (baby quilts!) I also need to find reds for
the setting triangles, and I should probably find some binding
at the same time.
In other news, I did finish binding the one baby quilt - the
quilt was made quite a while ago. I measured first, and I
thought I had enough. I didn't allow enough for the joins! I
should have joined them square instead of on an angle as that
would have given me enough. How short was it? about 2 inches! I
managed to salvage some scraps - we're talking triangles that
were about an inch and a half - and sewed them together and
joined it all in. Thankfully, the kid won't care. It's hardly
noticeable, and I think when I machine sew the second side, it
will be even less so.

What can I say, I want to collect a few sewing machines. It's
not like it's illegal...although I have never found one for $5!
At least that has kept me from filling my sewing room with
vintage machines in need of a lot of TLC for cleaning, oiling,
and repairs...

My daughter has a young-adult fantasy book in which the dragons
of the land all hoard different things. One hoards shoes, one
hoards stained-glass windows; one hoards dogs...
I know what your dragon hoard would be!
(Mine would be Swarovski crystals.)

Actually, it would probably be books.
With my mother, my sister, and my daughter hanging around to
trade out any duplicates in their hoarsfor duplicates in my
hoard, and arguing about what to do if there aren’t a total of
four copies of each title. Espellialy the Vorkosigan titles.
Sewing machine, we could get by with three duplicates, while my
daughter hoarded supplies of the materials fo me to make things
for her.
And chocolate....why hoard just one thing?
