There are two styles of Singer/Simanco design discs from this
era - one is flat and black - about two inches across. The
second is black and flat with a raised ring in the middle - it's
called a "top hat" disc. Check eBay if you're in the USA or
Craigslist - there were a lot of those machines made and some
people are selling the accessories after a machine has quit
working or a relative has died (I didn't ask why they were for
sale, I just bought the ones I wanted).

If you're on Facebook, there are probably Singer collector
groups - I'm on one for older Kenmore/White machines. The
posters have loads of good information on where to get parts,
how to clean the machines, how to fix problems, etc. I agree
-love the color!

Checked out the eBay pages on Singer machines of that color, it
could be a 338 or a 348 - same flat design discs about two
inches across - same way to get a copy of the user manual
printed off or saved to your computer as a PDF from the Singer
website. Same metal build and pretty much the same "reputation"
as a good machine that is most likely still sewing just fine
some fifty or sixty years after it was made.

I own a Singer 503 and love it. The older machines were made
with gears, not belts, and are workhorses! Mine takes the
"top-hat" type of discs. Mine have numbers on them. So, if you
know the number you need, they are easier to figure out if that
is the one you are looking for. I was at a thrift store the
other day and was encouraging the woman to buy one for herself.
(Too far from home to be able to buy it for myself. I told her
that I would have already bought if I could have gotten in
home!)

Woo Hoo! [emoji12][emoji322] Block 11 of my Block of the
(YEAR) Month is done! On to block 12 - I am determined to finish
it this week, however you should know, there are about 40 one
inch circles and 30-some leaves to hand blanket stitch, besides
9 long stems and one flower pot, so it will be a challenge.
Here's a link to images - the first image is how I am going to
do it, with all the blocks set right side up. The second image
is how the original was done, with the side flowers facing the
side, to I am guessing be right side up as they fall down the
side of a bed. I am not doing the border flowers (did I ever
tell how I got into doing this quilt? It's part of the reason
why not!) but I will probably do the checkerboard setting
triangles and then will have to decide if that's big enough or
if I need to figure out another way to border it. (Mine will
look almost exactly like the original as the person who bought
all the stuff found all the exact fabric!)

That is going to be very lovely. I like the first pictures way
of doing the flowers better. I'd love to see pictures of yours
when it is done. (I don't think I've heard the story of how you
got into doing this quilt, would you tell it again? Or refer me
to where it is if it is on this site.

The flat discs have the same # and schematic of the stitch
design on them that the top hats do - they will store in less
space due to being flat. I have no idea which design came first
- I do remember seeing two other designs, some of them in
different colors as well as slightly different shapes, for other
brands of sewing machines. But I never owned one of those
machines...either new or used.

VorFemme, So are both types usable in your machine? That would
be amazing, as it would mean that I should try to see if both
would work in mine!

I don't think I did tell the story here before, here or on
ehell. I think I just told it to so many people now I am
forgetting who and where I told it! Many years ago, like +15,
someone gave my friend a bunch of quilting stuff that she no
longer wanted. Included in the bag was a block of the month and
she asked if my friend knew anyone that might do it. My friend
said yes... Well, I tell ya, if I had had a machine that could
do blanket stitch at the time, I would have definitely done it
that way. Included were all twelve patterns - at $15 per - wow!
Then, she got all the fabric to match the patterns! You couldn't
do that now because it's so old. Not only that, she traced all
the pieces onto the fusible, fused everything, and cut it ALL
out - all twelve blocks! The only thing she didn't do was the
border - sheesh, what's up with that?! All I had to provide was
the backgrounds. Thankfully, my former cross-stitching came in
handy as I had all the floss in all the colours to match. So the
patterns totalled about $189 (including tax), then I don't know
how much she would have spent on fabric. I think she probably
got a lot of fq's, plus at least one roll of fusible. What a
deal, hey? I would never have gotten this set of patterns. I
wish I was a designer because what a racket, hey, $15/pattern
for a block of the month when you can get books with 5-10 full
quilt patterns for $35!
The next challenge will be trying to figure out how to have it
quilted. I don't want a panto (edge to edge repeated design)
because that will go right through all the applique, but free
motion quilting is a lot more expensive so we'll see. Maybe I
will just count this as my one masterpiece, and just go for it,
but I can see it costing upwards of $400+ to have it quilted.
