       Responding to FB suggestions
By: Hmmm Date: May 24, 2018, 3:21 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
This is very minor, but interested in other's opinions.
On Monday, I did a online, curbside grocery order. I was in a
hurry and didn't pay too close of attention. I thought I was
ordering a pound of rice but ended up with a 10lb bag. While I
love rice, we try to do a low carb so decided to donate. I
posted in a FB group that I'd like to donate the bag and could
any provide a suggestion. I got 8 suggestions. One was a school
very close to me who's PTA does weekend care packages for about
10 families of the school. I figured my 10lbs of rice would help
them out more than going to the city food bank or one of the
shelters and it was one of the more convenient places to drop
off. I dropped off and received no less than 4 thank you FB
messenger notes and an additional 2 from the families who
       received it.
One of the other suggestions was for a food bank that this FB
group does a lot of activities to support. The group's admin
posted "I contacted the coordinator for food bank and she'd love
to accept your donation. Thank you so much!"
So my question would be, would you notify the food bank that
they would not be receiving this donation?
Does it matter if this food bank receives enough donations to
distribute 80 million meals per year so my 10lbs of rice is a
not even a drop in the bucket.
Would you let the admin of the FB group know the donation went
       somewhere else?

I would let the group's admin know that I used one of the other
suggestions and ask them to forward the information along to the
food bank. In my opinion, they overstepped in the first place,
       so they should fix it.
Then I would probably end up feeling guilty and buy another bag
of rice during my normal shopping and drop it off.

I would comment on her post "Sorry, it went to the PTA care
       package group.  Maybe next time!"

You don't have to contact her privately. She may have just
mentioned it to the Food bank coordinator in passing. I think
most people would assume that a food bank would love to have 10
lbs of rice. Any staples like that are really great.
And honestly, if you continue to do the online shopping, this is
going to happen again! I used to do it and some of things I got
just boggled my mind! I thought I was ordering a bunch of
bananas--no, they wanted to know exactly how many bananas. So,
my incredibly huge order meant for a family of 5 would have a
       single banana!   ::)

That is so funny. My first experience of "pay attention to
quantity" was also with bananas. I was planning to make banana
pudding and all the other produce had been based on pounds. So I
tried to figure out weight of bananas and entered pounds. I
ended up with a lot more bananas than I expected.
Had a similar issue with broccoli crowns. When I buy them it
seems like 2 "crowns" is enough for 4 for a single serving. I
ordered 2 and couldn't fit them in my really large fridge. We
ate broccoli every day for 4 days.

At least you don't run into the mix up that occasionally happens
in the UK with mixing up lb in weight with GBP sterling
Years ago a colleague had been asked by his father to buy two
pounds of green beans - he went to the market at lunch and came
back with two carrier bags full as he brought two pounds worth
       in money rather than weight

(and as an aside, I *hate hate hate* when people say "thank you"
so preemptively like this; wait until I've actually done it,
then thank me. Or, thank me for thinking of you, or something
       else that I've actually done)

I was a little irked about her "thank you" since I hadn't
committed to sending it there. But she is a really sweet woman
who does a lot of fundraising for the food bank so I figured she
       just didn't really think.
I decided to not respond at all. I asked a frequent volunteer at
the food bank if it would be noticeable and he said no. I figure
the next time I see the admin in person, I might mention it to
       her.
