Can I go ahead of you please? I only have a few items.

Is this still a valid request?
I do not ever ask this anymore. With Express "15 items or fewer"
type lanes and self-checkout, it seems to me that there are
plenty of lanes for those with just a few items.
To clarify, I don't often buy a cartload of groceries anymore
nowadays. It's just me and I usually only need a few things. So
it would be ME asking, not someone asking me. And I really
       haven't in years now.
So I'm just curious. When was the last time you asked? When was
the last time you had someone ask you?
What's your opinion of whether this is still ok?

I’ve never been asked, but would absolutely allow them to go
ahead. I tend to have a full cart (impulse buying!) and if i
notice the person behind me has only a few items I offer to
switch places with them. Since I’ve retired I’m rarely in a rush
       to go anywhere.

If asked I would say I am short on time. If I notice someone
has 1-2 items or I know I will be slow, I motion them ahead of
me. Today someone behind me had 2 items and started to open his
mouth, saw I had 3 items, and closed his mouth.

I've never asked but had people offer for me to go ahead. I also
do the same if I notice someone behind me who only have a few
       items.
I haven't done it lately though because like you said, there's
usually self-checkouts and the wait is usually not too long.
Also, I've witnessed customers who only have 1-3 items take
longer than a customer with a cart full of stuff (price check,
       trouble paying, slow cashier, etc.)

Honestly, I think it's pretty presumptuous to ask someone if you
can cut ahead unless it's a REAL emergency and your market has
none of those self-check out lines. I know a lot of people don't
like to use them because they feel they are depriving someone of
a job. And I tend to agree (unless Zuly or Chevon are monitoring
those lines). But, if I am in THAT much of a hurry, it's a lot
more courteous than arrogantly assuming that my time is more
important than the person ahead of me on line.
Even saying that, I am also one of those people who will offer
someone with only a few items (if I have a lot) a place ahead of
       me on line.

When I was much younger and self check out or 15 and under lines
were rare, it was pretty common to ask. But I no longer ask
anymore since I have other options.
So many grocer stores in my area only have 1 or 2 attended lanes
open anymore. I'm more irritated by the people with one or two
items that refuse to use self checkout. A few weeks ago, I had a
cart full of items. They only had one lane open. There were 4
people in line in front of me with 1 to 4 items. There are 6
self checkout stations and no lines for them.
My sister refuses to use self check out because she says it
takes jobs away. I counter with yes, it might reduce the jobs at
the grocery store but there is a whole industry designing,
manufacturing and maintaining these devices. NCR is one of the
largest providers and manufacturers of the devices and does
       their manufacturing in the US.

I love self checkout, but a certain store now only take cards
for them. You must go to a cashier if paying cash but there's
only one cashier. Two if I'm lucky enough to there at the right
time. So I'm standing in line behind at least 4 customers with
full carts with my $1.00 item because I don't want to use my
card to pay one measly dollar. It is beyond irritating.
If that's the policy, at least hire someone for an express lane.

Ha! I've heard some people say they don't like to use the
self-checkout because they ought to get paid for doing a
cashier's job! Or anyway, some similar sentiment.
I do avoid self-checkout sometimes if I have clearance items, as
more often than not, you end up needing the cashier to come over
and enter her code to verify the price. I was at Home Depot the
other day and there were four self-checkout stations (and no
full-service ones!), and all four of us needed assistance. It
sure would have been quicker for all four of us to have lined up
and have her check us out instead of each of us waiting for her
to go from station to station, enter her code, and do whatever
       each of us needed.
I guess I went way off topic there! I like doing self-checkout
when I can, but yeah, there are some drawbacks.
Regarding card-only lanes, I always use my card, if possible,
even for very small amounts, because, you know, points! It all
       adds up.
Since the merchant has to pay credit card fees, they are
probably losing money if you use your CC for a $1 sale.
I guess that the machines which accept cash and return change
require a certain amount of maintenance to keep them stocked.
