Your house smells like cat pee
By: lowspark Date: July 28, 2025, 10:51 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
I already know I'm NOT going to say this, or anything, because I
know it would not go over well coming from me.
But I'm curious, what would you do?
       Here's the situation.
A good friend has a dog and three cats. Up till extremely
recently, her house was fine. Clean, no smell issues.
However, about a week ago, I went over there for a short visit,
and the smell of cat pee was overwhelming. What I mean is, it
wasn't just a hint, or in a certain room. It was everywhere in
the house, and it was strong. I smelled it the second I walked
       in the door.
She had mentioned to me previously that one of her cats was not
using the litter box, and that she had set up a camera to see
which one. She identified the guilty party, and is convinced
that the cat in question has a UTI which explains its issue.
I honestly didn't think about it much one way or the other till
I stepped into her house and smelled it.
I am not a pet person -- I don't have any and while I'm fine
around animals, I don't go out of my way to interact with them,
and honestly prefer not to have to engage.
That alone is a good enough reason for me not to say anything to
       her.
However, multiple people have been in her house over the last
week, and there has been discussion among them, some including
       me, about the smell.
No one, to my knowledge, has said anything to her. It's a
       difficult subject to broach!
So I'm curious - would you say anything? And if so, what?

Living in an environment with strong urine odors can be very
harmful to a person's health. Urine odor is caused by the
ammonia in urine and can be toxic to the lungs (of humans and
other animals) and particular dangerous to people with asthma
and/or allergies. Additionally, if the urine is left untreated,
it will promote the growth of harmful bacteria.
This is not a cleanliness issue, it is a health issue and should
       be addressed as such.

I'm going to agree with oogyda about the health issue.
I think a good way to start the conversation is to ask about her
cat, the one with the UTI, is kitty okay? on meds? Is she using
the litter box again? Then you can ease into the odor with "I
bet it's going to be a pain having all your carpets shampooed
       and treated for urine oopsies . . . "
If she says "I got someone coming out next week" then all is
       good.
If she balks, then gently go into the health issues.
It's always difficult to bring up a person's housekeeping. But
from what you said it seems that she is aware of the situation.
Maybe that's why she explained kitty's UTI.

Does one of your other friend's have a cat? If so, maybe they
could inquire if the UTI issue has resolved. And then could
casually mention that "if you need a product to help get the
urine smell out, we found Nature's Miracle worked really well.
But my friend ended up having to call in a professional service
to deep clean all of her carpets."

Second the Nature's Miracle. Living with a senior citizen
kittah, we bought it in gallons.
