       What do you know about yarn?

       I know nothing. My mother is an avid knitter. During my last
       visit with her she pulled out a very large bag full of hats and
       scarves that she knitted and will be donating (she's been doing
       this for years). She mentioned that she's using her remnant
       pieces so some of the hats used a variety of colors, still with
       a nice pattern. Gorgeous, every one of them. She also said that
       the price of yarn has nearly doubled at the Walmart and there
       isn't a yarn shop in her town.
       So, I would like to give her a bunch of yarn for Christmas, but
       I don't have a clue as to what to look for in yarn. How do you
       know it's good quality?
       Do you have any tips or pointers on buying good yarn? Any help
       would be appreciated! Thanks!
