Not a question just a bit of a humurous travel story

My husband and I were returning to the US on an international
flight and we had to change planes in Munich. Our outbound
flight was delayed and when we arrived in Munich no gate was
open so they had to unload us to a bus and then drive us over to
the terminal. I'd say 80% of the people on the flight were doing
connections and everyone was running late. When we got to the
terminal, airline employees were standing out about every 200
feet with signs directing us to either our Chicago flight or a
NYC flight. We had to go through immigration and then get on
another tram to another terminal. Again, there were airport
employees urging us to hurry up that both planes were being held
for us but they were getting ready to close the doors. There was
another check of our passports prior to getting to the gates and
they had two lines open. By now we are down to about 40 of us
who've been riding buses, standing in immigration lines
together, riding the trams and practically running through the
terminals together for about 45 minutes when we hit this line.
DH and another man were even carrying other peoples backpacks by
now. There was a very large group of about 20 people who had all
been on a tour together (a Catholic group on a sort of
pilgrimage) and so we let them go in front of us as they arrived
at the checkpoint line.
So we are in our line and probably about 10 people have been
checked and gone through and there is about another 6 or so
behind us when suddenly the agent makes a remark to me (I'm
next) that standing so close isn't going to get us through any
faster and will just take longer. He said this in a very snarky
and condescending manner. I look around and realize that there
was a yellow line about 2 feet behind me but no one in our line
or the line next to us had paid any attention. I apologized and
said I hadn't noticed the line as the airline employees had
really been rushing us. My husband said "Don't apologized to him
when he's being an ass". I responded "even though I was tired I
could still be polite even to assh**es".
The funny parts:
The other agent overheard (well actually everyone heard because
we were so bunched up), smiled and asked the person next in her
line if she minded if she took DH and I next. As she checked us
through she gave me a wink.
When we all arrived in Chicago, and were waiting for our
luggage, one of the Priests with the Catholic group came over to
me and said that his group had traveled so well together over
the previous 3 weeks and had been so helpful and courteous but
when a connection was about to be missed it became a dog eat dog
world and he got a kick out of my comment to the gate agent.

I would reckon it "a truth universally acknowledged", that --
whether on religion-related scenes, or elsewhere -- it's easier
for people to be pleasant and considerate to each other, when
things are going smoothly; than when they go less so, and
there's potential competition (in the widest sense) for what
folk require / need...

Thank you for sharing this story! It's a true testament of how
being polite instead of a mumbly, grumbly in tough situations
pays off.
Kudos to you for standing up for etiquette!

DH and I were flying out of a small(ish) airport for the first
leg of a cross-country trip. The 2 agents at the counter had
already been dealing with a group of demanding people when it
was announced that the flight was delayed due to mechanical
issues that they were fixing. That triggered the already
demanding group to get almost hostile in their efforts to get on
another flight in order to make their connections.
Now, DH is an imposing figure due to his height and the way he
carries himself after 20 years in the military. Plus he has RBF
(resting bitch face). The young woman who had just been dealing
with this group looked up at him with a look I can't describe.
It seemed obvious she was steeling herself to endure more
mistreatment. She almost melted into tears when he actually
smiled and asked if we could just get the same flight tomorrow.
We took the airport shuttle back to the hotel and had no problem
getting our room back since it had not yet been cleaned.
It wasn't until we checked in the next morning that we found out
she had upgraded us to first class for the entire trip.
