Thank you all for the kind support and well-thought answers that
helped me refine why she upset me so much. I think I was
spinning between "That's not even cherry picking" (thanks for
the example Aleko) to "Why are you telling your child I'm not a
nice person?! That's rude!" to "This is the only thing I'm
       remotely interested in eating!"
Aldi has these mixed cases of things all the time and it is
annoying. My husband has bought a case of corn intending to
separate what's on the shelf so he gets whole kernels and ends
up with a can or two of cream style. It happens often enough
that I make corn pudding for holidays with the random cans that
built up over the year. It's a running bit at our house, he
insists he bought the perfect case and I reach in and pull out
the cream-style can while he accuses me of some sleight of hand.
Thanks for the well wishes, Rho. It's mostly cleared and my
       hummus is still tasty.

Perfect example of what we're talking about. My family buys the
creamed corn but maybe a can of whole kernels only once in a
while. So between us, it all even out :D.

The products are there for people to buy. There's no shame in
taking what you want or need. Sometimes I will leave the last of
something for someone else because it makes me feel good, but it
definitely isn't wrong to take advantage of a good sale price!
I've taken the last of something more than once. It happens.
About carrots: f the retailer doesn't want people to pick
certain colors they should sell them in sealed multicolor bags.

This is a farm shop, and the whole point of buying produce at a
farm shop instead of a supermarket is that it is grown locally
and displayed loose for you to take a paper bag and fill it with
what you need, instead of buying a sealed bag containing a fixed
amount (I remember once having to buy a 2-kilo bag - more than
4lb - of carrots at a supermarket when actually I only needed
one!) of stuff that may have been grown halfway across the world
and been chilled for months, possibly irradiated, etc.
And as it happens, these particular carrots are all grown by the
same farmer who delivers them to the shop in mixed sacks.

Buying 3 or 4 is not "shelf clearing". Buying 10 or 12 and
wiping out the stock would be clearing the shelf

I work in a retail store - a very small one. We don't get a lot
of anything. If Joe Shmoe is a size 44 and comes in and buys
three awesome shirts size XXL, the next XXL fellow that comes in
       is out of luck.
We buy stuff to sell it for a higher price and make a profit.
That's how stores work, as far as I know.
Clothes don't go bad if they don't get sold in a timely manner.
       Food spoils.

That lady was being ridiculous. I would have been tempted to
       respond: "First in, best dressed!"

Then...people are buying what they need or want, and apparently
they don't want the orange carrots. The customer is always right
(when it comes to knowing what it is they want to buy).

Even in that farmer's market situation, I'm not even sure it
would occur to me that people are supposed to buy an assortment
of colors of carrots, including orange ones, unless there were a
sign with something like "carrot medley" or "rainbow carrots"
indicating that. I'd just think it was a big bin of carrots,
and I am supposed to choose the ones I want, whether by size or
color or shape or anything else, the same as any other big bin
       of produce.
It's really not that different from everything else they sell.
I mean, like, say they put the yellow onions in one bin and red
in another. They know how many they sell of each, probably not
exactly equal amounts. If tomorrow they mix them in one bin,
are they going to be surprised, let alone frustrated, that their
customers aren't suddenly automatically buying equal numbers of
       each?
I agree with Toots -- the shop needs to recognize what the
shoppers want and plan accordingly, rather than "go crazy"
expecting something else. That may mean separating and perhaps
pricing differently the different colors of carrots, or making
up "rainbow" bunches, or putting up a sign.
