Drive thru window etiquette - from the passenger seat
By: Hmmm Date: July 21, 2023, 8:41 am
---------------------------------------------------------
Looking for input based on experience last night. Husband and I
had an early dinner before attending an event last night. Coming
home, he decided he wanted a milkshake and pulled into a fast
food drive through. I didn't want anything. When we got to the
window he greeted the worker (female) who confirmed his order
and they did the payment. The whole time I was staring off in
another direction trying to read a sign about a new restaurant
opening up. I hear the woman say "Good evening ma'am are you ok
tonight? Anything you need?" I turn and say with a smile "I'm
well, no I do want anything but thanks for asking." When she
brings the drink back she again addresses me with something like
"are you sure there's nothing you need?"
As we drove away I wondered allowed if she had thought I had
been rude by not greeting her upon arrival at the window. My
husband's take was she was checking to make sure I wasn't in
some type of distress and needed assistance. Which if he was
right... well done her!
But I'm still wondering this morning if when you are the
passenger at a drive thru, should you do some type of
acknowledgement of the staff?

She was checking to see if you were being abused or if your
husband was being rude to you. Or if you were being trafficked.
Or possibly she was telegraphing that she thinks your
husband was being rude to you by not "allowing" or encouraging
you to get something for yourself as well.

As a passenger, I've never really speak to the staff. Even if I
need something, I tell the driver and they will pass on the
message since I figure it's easier that way instead of shouting
over the driver.
So yeah, I think your husband is right that the employee thought
something was wrong since you were staring off.

I agree with Rose Red and TootsNYC that the employee was likely
concerned about your safety. (I discussed this briefly with my
wife just now, and that's what she thinks, too.)

My husband will be thrilled that you guys agree he had a better
read on the situation than I did. :)

I wonder if maybe the employee had recently seen something in
the media about kidnapping or trafficking and was especially
sensitive to it. Or maybe they it had been mentioned in some
kind of training.
Whatever the reason, as you said, good on her for being aware.

I find the whole exchange rather bizarre. The words she used do
sort of indicate that she was concerned about your
safety/wellbeing. But I gotta wonder what triggered that
concern! Does she do that with every car passenger or just those
which somehow trigger a warning flag for her?
On the other hand, without hearing her tone, another possibility
is that she was just trying to upsell y'all. Only one shake?
Surely the passenger wants SOMETHING! That sort of thing.
But to answer your ultimate question, no. As a passenger, I
don't normally have any interaction with the staff of a drive
through unless I did order something and needed to communicate
about that order. Like asking for extra ketchup or some such.
But even then, I'd probably just tell the driver to ask that!

direction[/quote]
This may have been what set off her alarm bells.
I doubt she's doing this for every passenger who doesn't
interact. She herself probably couldn't even specifically say
what prompts her.

I agree with lowspark, I think she was just subtly trying to
pressure you to buy something. Nothing more than that, at least
she was polite about it.
