I think the point the OP is trying to make is that they should
have been informed not to respond to these emails before ever
receiving them. Being told this after the fact makes it feel
like a reprimand when it may not be. When you are used to doing
a good job and now suddenly you are being told you did something
wrong it is a hard pill to take especially when you were never
told this was the wrong approach. I think management was a bit
lacking in their training.

It is very hard to know what you need to train someone on
especially when they are new to a role. "I don't know what you
don't know". To me it has always been pretty clear that you ask
questions to the lowest person on the totem pole who can answer
the question. In school, I wasn't going to interrupt the School
Principal to ask a question my teacher or the school secretary
could answer. If I have a question about a prescription from my
doctor, I'm usually going to ask to speak to the nurse first. It
would have never dawned on me that someone would ask a company
executive or upper management about the location of a store when
there are so many different ways to get that answer. OP cc'd his
manager, so why not just send the email to his manager first?

Life just doesn't work that way. The manager can't think of
everything they might need to tell a new employee, and
especially so with an employee in a new role.
As long as it's not turned into something punitive, it's
completely reasonable for this to occur.

Maybe. If this is a huge problem that every new lead makes, then
add it to the training manual. But I tend to agree that this
falls within the realm of "they can't possibly train you for
ever scenario".
I think that everyone, including high performers, need to learn
to take correction without being overly emotional about it.
Everyone makes mistakes. Everyone needs feedback. If you can get
to a place where you can receive this feedback in a neutral
emotional state, fix the issue, and simply move on, the better
you will be at any job. However, if the manager feels like they
need to handle you with kid gloves on, then the whole situation
becomes more challenging for everyone... even the one making the
error.
