       tipping the hairdresser

I cut my own hair at home. I have colored it successfully for
many years, too, but this week tried to take a shortcut and
       failed miserably.
I have an appointment Monday with someone to color my hair - no
idea how much to tip her, or how to tip her. Do i hand her the
tip? Leave it at the desk? 20%? 25%? Cash? written in on the
       bill?

I tip 20% and add to the credit card.

In my area (mid-Atlantic) 20% is appropriate for the
stylist/colorist. I would check with the salon ahead of time
however. The salon I use will not add the tip to the credit
card charge, so I tip with cash. See if the shampooist has a
tip jar by her/his station. I've seen dollar bills (again, in
my area I think $2 is standard but edging towards $5) and fives
in the glass tip jar. I leave my stylist's tip at his station.

According to my DD#2 (Salon owner) -- At least 20%, given
directly to the stylist. Cash is always the preferred method for
       tipping, even at restaurants.

It turns out tipping on the credit card is not allowed - so,
       cash in an envelope?
I would have forgotten about the shampoo! Last time I was in a
salon and got a shampoo, I think the stylist did it herself.

Whenever I have done a cash tip, I have just handed it to the
individual without an envelope. I'm not sure that it's
necessary, although maybe others feel differently.

For the stylist, I tuck a folded bill between two things on his
station but keep it visible. No envelope. The shampooist has a
       tip jar.
