       Gift Ideas for Piano Teacher
By: Jem Date: November 22, 2022, 4:58 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
I have a milestone piano performance coming up (Rhapsody in Blue
piano solo) and I want to give my piano teacher a nice card and
gift to thank him for all of the work he has done with me to get
the piece performance ready. I was initially thinking a nice
bottle of wine but I don't know if he drinks. I was then
thinking an holiday ornament that is piano related, but I
imagine he gets tons of these from his younger students. I don't
want to simply give cash, but I am not coming up with a better
       option.
Any suggestions are appreciated! A fruit basket? Fancy
chocolate? Thanks in advance for any ideas!

My vote would be fancy chocolates! If he's ever mentioned in
conversation a hobby or something he collects then something to
do with that might be appropriate.

Something from a bakery would also be good. The pleasure of
opening a nice bakery box and debating what to eat first from a
selection of individual pies and cakes is just like the fun of
       opening chocolates.
As sadiesadie mentioned, also something related to whatever his
       interests might be.
What a wonderful piece of music! And how exciting for you! Break
       a leg!

Home baked Bread or from a independent Bakery. Not sugary
like chocolates ( but a keyboard shaped slab of candy would be
       awesome) or worrysome like wine.

I have previously hinted that I am a dance teacher. The amount
of thoughtful, well meaning gifts is insane. With Christmas
approaching, I know that I will be receiving another haul. And
while I do not want to seem ungrateful, I end up spending much
time figuring out what to do with everything. The absolute best
gift is always a card with a hand written note expressing what I
did that you appreciate. Those messages are what keeps me going
       when the job becomes taxing.
I understand that that does not feel like enough (although it
is), so if you must include a material gift, cash has always
been my favorite. I know that it feels impersonal, but when push
comes to shove, it is a job and a cash tip (like you would
provide to the other people in your life who do great work for
you) helps to pay my bills. Sadly, this is super rare for me.
My second favorite are disposable gifts like food and gift
cards. Sometimes these go to waste as I get overwhelmed with
chocolates and treats, but at least they do not clutter my home
for long. I have a stack of unused gift cards that I am
constantly trying to eliminate. I never pay out of pocket at
Starbucks or Panera. I also carry around a second wallet just
for the gift cards (mind you, I don't carry around ALL of the
Target cards that I have, just one at a time that I replace as I
use them.) I know that you said that you don't know if he
drinks, but I would enjoy the wine (another rare one). I
occasionally get coffee, but more often, it's the Starbucks
       card.
I suppose candles and lotions could also fall into this
category, but I have large storage containers of backlogs to
these. If I find an opportunity to return, regift, or donate
these, I do. Bath and Body Works has sometimes given me cash for
       returns, which is amazing!
After a performance, I go home with enough flowers to fill
several vases. But those do typically disappear after a week or
       so.
While all the dancey gifts are cute, it all becomes clutter. I
have enough ornaments to decorate a second Christmas tree; it's
a bit insane. I know that the trinkets are meant to be
sentimental, but I have so many that I cannot remember who gave
me what! I have so many holiday mugs that every year I end up
getting rid of some. And the hot chocolate goes to my mom (she
typically doesn't have to buy any each year.)
I suppose that my nah-saying doesn't help, but I always try to
share my perspective as I think people go so insane trying to
come up with the perfect gift to express their gratitude and it
really is as simple as writing that note.
And congratulations on your upcoming performance; I have no
doubt that you will play beautifully!

I also think disposable gifts are the best. Restaurant prices
are so high now that a gift card is nice if you know one of his
       favorite places.

I think these are often so underestimated by the givers of them.
Especially write in some level of detail. Don't just say "thank
you for everything, I've learned so much."
Spend a little time thinking of how you'd tell someone why you
appreciate them, what specifically they did, or how specifically
       they worked with you.
And also talk a bit about how the whole thing has affected
you--that it brings you joy. That you find yourself "playing"
the music in your head, or dancing the steps on the way to the
bathroom. How you feel proud of yourself for having improved,
and that you see their influence there.
Don't be short. Be long. Be detailed.
And then NOTHING tangible that you could give them will matter
       as much.
If it feels low-effort, then you aren't writing enough detail.
And you can spend some money or energy getting a really nice
paper to write or print it out on.

LOL! So much for my suggestion of something like this:

DaDancingPsych's post was quite enlightening! I never thought
about all the trinkets that would have been gathered over the
       years.
I do like the well thought out TY note. Especially a detailed
       one, like Toots suggested.

Thanks so much for all the suggestions! I think I will get him a
nice card and write about how much he has helped me. Thank you!
