I agree with Toots also, about the interaction being so
important. I wouldn't put out a bowl on the porch - mainly
because it would be stolen. I love seeing the kids and they love
       the candy. That's our trade-off.
I will also say that in my day older kids (12+) were socially
discouraged from trick or treating. To the point that homeowners
would regularly call them out if they came to their door:
"Aren't you a little old to be trick or treating?" This wasn't
considered rude back then, as the older kids knew they were
pushing the limits. I think this might have been where my mother
who turned away the older ones this year was coming from,
although IMO she did it in a very bad way. I would have just
given the candy to everyone until it ran out, and then turned
       off the light.
I don't care how old they are now as long as they are
respectful. And at least some attempt at a costume is
       appreciated, but not required.

I like the way trick or treating is done here.
We live in a building with a large, landscaped courtyard in the
center. On the weekend before Halloween we have a sort of
party. Children who live in the building invite school friends
for our parade and the children parade around the courtyard.
After that, adult residents ( often costumed) are out with
bowls of candy. The whole thing is over in about an hour.
Children and their guests usually retire to small Halloween
parties hosted by the parents of resident children. Everybody
       has a nice time.
On Halloween afternoon, merchants in the neighborhood stand in
the doorways of their shops and give out treats. The treats
will be small. When you’re hit with 300 kids you can’t be
handing out whole chocolate bars but the shop owner dressed as a
lady being devoured by a shark makes up for the treat of a
       fortune cookie.
About 5pm the streets clear as people go home to eat dinner
before the parade at 7pm. The parade is good. We usually have
a Camparsa band, a pipe band and a steel pan ensemble playing
       Zombie Jamboree.
       .
I love Halloween in our neighborhood.

On the vein of eating leftover candy...
A friend had a degree in nutrition and was helping me come up
with a food plan, near Halloween. She suggested buying candy I
didn't like, to hand out. I told her that if I did that, my
       house would get egged! ;D

Every year our office does a Trunk or Treat. I love it because
it is fun seeing the kids from the neighborhood have a safe
place to gather and play for a few hours. This year we did a
drive thru trunk or treat. It wasn't as much fun, but I was glad
to see the kiddos anyway. I hope that next year we can go back
       to the kids walking around.

I misread that as "drunk or treat."
