motion-activated garden hose or sprinklers?
No front garden: ours is a standard 18th-century English town
house with just a few steps up from the street to the door, a
bit like this.

Any water-spraying device would drench innocent passers-by, and
even if it could be targeted to wet only people who were
actually on the steps, it would probably be illegal, given that
people could have perfectly legitimate reasons to come to the
door. And as there are no plants to be watered it would be quite
impossible to argue that it wasn't intended as an anti-people
device.

What a trial to go thru. :( Thank heaven for your strong, oak
door.
How was Halloween? Quiet I hope.

We finished up our fourth and last night of our haunted house.
We raised $1020 and a pile of food to be distributed to our two
local foodbanks. We are exhausted! And we still have to pack
everything up.

I am really struggling with deciding if I want to treat the
trick or treaters this year. It hasn't been a lot of fun the
past few years (only a few kids show up; none of them want to
interact... I might get a grunted thank you.) I don't have
children, so I don't feel like I've abused the system by taking
and not giving. Yet, I still feel guilty for not treating.
There's a movie that has sparked my interest at the theater, so
maybe I should spend the two hours doing that??? I guess we'll
see how I'm feeling on Saturday.
Don't feel guilty. I gave up on trick-or-treaters years ago.
It seems that apartments I've lived in bring out the worst
brats. The last apartment I was in, the kids were either
vandals, or they'd try to take advantage and stick their whole
arm in the bowl of candy and scoop the whole thing into their
bag. So I didn't even answer the door anymore.
Now I live in an over-50 condo complex, and no children ever
come by. I'm relieved.
I'm very fond of the Reese's peanut butter cup commercial, that
says, 'Turn off the light and don't answer the door!'. I can
live with that. ;D
Thank you for sharing; it helps to know I'm not the only one.
It's sad that a few bad people can ruin the whole thing
(although I guess that's sort of theme here!) And I love that
commercial. Trust me, I've already purchased the treats... I
just haven't decided who will be eating them!!! ;D
I live alone, so it's OBVIOUS who will be eating them! ;D

We had beautiful weather last night and fully expected a packed
street. But we only had about a dozen or so groups come through
and our last one was by 7pm when we'd normally have them up to
9pm.
A friend moved into a swanky neighborhood about 8 months ago and
was very excited as she was told it was a neighborhood big on
Halloween. and did up special bags with full size candy bars and
a couple of cute treats in each bag. She started posting about
7:30 last night saying to please come get bags as she'd only
given out 20 of the 100 bags she'd made.
I'm wondering if others are seeing a decrease. During 2020 &
2021, we had a big decrease but was expecting it to be back up
to normal levels this year.

Our doorbell only rang 3 times. One kid looked about 5 years old
so I'm thinking this is their first time trick-or-treating so
was very excited about the candy :D. The last group had about 10
kids but it was later in the evening so they probably felt safer
in a group.
I guess kids (or parents) still don't feel safe regarding Covid.

We had much less too. It used to be 65+ kids (pre-Covid, but it
was starting to dwindle before Covid). This year it was only 43
kids.
I was being a grouch and thinking that it wasn't worth it (the
treats and also the decor), but then I realized that most all
the kids were young ones (mostly under 10, a few 11-12). So,
remembering the joy I felt as a little kid trick-or-treating,
I'll keep doing it.
Y'all can hold me to this next year!

I stopped handing out candy quite a few years ago after my town
started doing the trick-or-treat thing downtown in the business
district. Most of the businesses invite trick-or-treaters (of
course they also hand out coupons and business information) and
it is mobbed. All of the T-o-Ters go downtown, and I started
getting less and less of them as the years went on. I finally
decided it wasn't worth the effort and stopped altogether.
This year? Not one bell-ring.
Sad side story I thought I'd share:
My niece took my DDs (six and four) out for ToT-ing one year.
They were gone for almost two hours. When they came back, Niece
was still smiling but I could tell that she was on the verge of
tears. Her treat bag was almost empty while the DDs bags were
very full.
She said that people told her that she was a rude mom for
begging for extra candy. She was too old for ToT-ing, and things
like that. Most just closed the door after giving the DDs a
treat without giving her a treat.
Niece was 12 years old.
I guess it didn't help that her choice of costume was a
biker-chick. This was back in the days when Harley's were super
cool. She wore her dad's leathers, did her hair wild with a
bandana tied around her forehead, well-done but lots of make-up.
Her mom approved and helped her with all of this.
It was quite a transformation from her normal shy, quiet,
t-shirt and jeans personality. But nobody answering the doorbell
knew that this was actually a costume.
Think about Sandy in "Grease" . . .
After they all came home, and the tale was told, I looked at
Niece and thought "Yeah, she does look much older than 12." Her
mom agreed.
Then DDs and Niece sat down in the living room, happily poured
out all of their candy and divvied up equally.
So it was a good ending to the sad story.

Our house was visited by almost as many kids as before Covid.
That was good to see. Last year and the year before we had
almost nobody, which was ok because we expected that and didn't
buy much candy then. Our neighborhood even held the normal
costume parade for anyone who wanted to join in. Our weather
was warm and clear too so no coat was needed like it is
sometimes. Overall, a good time!

JPCher, That is a sad story.
Anyone who is clearly not an adult and goes to the trouble of
putting on a costume should get a treat and not a lecture.
That's the spirit of the holiday.
5 girls about 13-14 ish came around dressed as 5 different
colored M&Ms. Gave me a laugh and them some candy (too bad I
didn't have M&Ms).
Another older girl came around dressed as a harlequin escorting
her young brother. She didn't say anything but she still got
candy.
Kudos to your DDs.
