Is "No Bad Days" good signage for a school?
By: sandisadie Date: August 14, 2022, 10:39 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
One day last week my local newspaper had on it's front page a
photo from an 8th grade school in the area. It depicted a
student and an adult walking in a hallway of the school.
Completely covering the wall was a mural which said in large
letters "No Bad Days" against the background of multicolored
       smiley faces.
I'm wondering if using the word "bad" is sending the wrong
message to students. Wouldn't it be better if the message
included the word "good days" in some way instead. I don't know
exactly how that would be worded but in my mind I think that
seeing a message about bad days might cause some students to
flash on their own bad days instead of looking forward to good
       ones.
       Any thoughts?

       Interesting question.
In advertising (this is, in essence, a slogan) one should always
       accentuate the positive.
"No Bad Days" actually uses two negatives (which equals a
positive ::)), but I do think you're right in your thinking, it
is somewhat of a false statement and could be misconstrued "What
do you mean no bad days. I just got an F on my paper! or Someone
bullied me" or some such thing. Children (and adults) do have
bad days, it's a part of growing up, it's a part of life.
A slogan like "Good Things Happen Here" sends a warm, welcoming
and positive message. It's not a guarantee that nothing bad will
ever happen, but it promotes the idea of hope. Even if something
bad happens, this slogan/attitude can be used to turn the bad
into good "You got an F on your paper, that's okay. Let's see
what we can do to make this (good) better."

It's simply ludicrous to suggest that there are no bad days.
It's a certain way to make small children cynical about their
school and their teachers, because they know it just isn't true.
Maybe what the school means is that there's some good even in
the worst days (as in 'every cloud has a silver lining') or
something; but as it stands it's just untrue, and to any child
slinking home after a bust-up with their best friend, an
encounter with the school bully and an F grade to show their
       parents, it's just a mockery.

I find it way too Pollyanna-ish. Of course there are bad days -
hey, someone wrote a kid's book about it. For a slogan, how
about "Let's Make it a Great Day."

Eh, it doesn't bother me. I think any motivational quote can be
       interpreted differently by the reader.
"Every day is a good day" can come off as dismissive of those
children who really are struggling that day. They may feel that
their classmates do only have good days and it's just them that
       are struggling.

"No bad days" is a silly and insulting slogan. The children who
have a bad home life, bullied in school by students and/or
teachers, failing, etc. know it's crap. Good teachers know it
       too.
They should have posters with information on how to get help if
needed. Even motivational posters are fine because there are
good times. But pretending it's "Rah Rah Sis Boom Bah" 24/7 is
       useless and eye-rolling.

This sounds like something that upper management would do where
I work. They are really out of touch with the reality that the
employees work with every day. We would just roll our eyes and
go on. The students aren't stupid. They'd do the same,
       probably for the same reasons.

Maybe don't take it so seriously. Ever consider that the
students themselves may have chosen it?
It's not a mandate, maybe more like something to shoot for
without the pressure of "Make it a good day." "No bad days"
       doesn't require anything from anyone.
I know someone who went on a trips with friends that was dubbed
"No wrong turns" meaning that wherever they went, that was where
they were meant to go. It's just a lighthearted way to remind
people to change their perspective. If they can't, or shouldn't
or don't, what does it matter?
Life is hard and no amount of slogans or posters is going to
change that either way. I think you all are making way too much
of a glimpse of something you saw in a newspaper.

Gee, it's almost like saying "Some days you just have to create
       your own sunshine." [emoji48]

I don't claim to be an expert, but I will say that I think
middle school/junior high students are incredibly vulnerable in
       their emotional development.
The slogan could easily be interpreted to mean one is not
allowed to have a bad day. Given that, some of the most
vulnerable would feel like they couldn't seek help or guidance
       they might have.
I think it misses the mark.
