How do I tip for this?
By: mime Date: July 28, 2022, 12:31 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
I just had some work done on my car. I was having trouble
starting it and wanted to just get it checked out in general
since I've barely driven it since I got it.
Normally I take my regular car to the dealership for service and
don't really think about tipping... but this isn't a normal
situation. This car is from 1958, so some parts aren't regular
stock and the whole engine isn't what you typically see these
days. The guys at this shop work on both modern and classic
cars, so it's not their day to day work but also not unheard-of.
I want to properly show my appreciation for the extra work that
my car entailed and the extra care they give to classics.
Tipping doesn't seem like the right the right approach (and
seriously: 20% of my bill seems excessive). I think I was
dealing with the owner on the phone, but not totally sure, and I
don't know who actually did the work.
If I did something like send continental breakfast for everyone
in the morning from the local bakery, would that be a reasonable
thank-you? Is there something else I should do?

Food seems appropriate and would be appreciated. I'd make sure
the food is something that will keep, so they might save some
for people who aren't working or who can't take a break when it
       arrives.

I agree with food, but I also think it's important to 'tip' the
people that actually worked on your car.
Would you be able to call the owner in order to find out who,
specifically worked on your car? Then maybe tip that person a
$10 gift card from Starbucks or Dunkin Doughnuts or something
       like that.
Along with the continental breakfast (I'm assuming bagels,
pastries, fruits, etc.) for the entire shop . . . but that
depends on the size of the shop and number of employees.
Just throwing this out there, maybe a crock-pot full of homemade
chili, or a sandwich spread type of thing instead of breakfast.
I'm betting that you are very pleased with the end results and
will return to them whenever you need service. I'm also betting
that all of the workers there said "Oh! Look at this classic
baby! I can't wait to get my hands on it!"
I think that you are right in trying to figure out something
special for the team that took care of you and your car.

I personally would think that mechanics with the ability to work
on classic cars are well compensated and a tip is not really
required. But it definitely wouldn't hurt to send some food with
a heartfelt thank you they can display in their shop.
And an online review is always welcome.

I was also thinking that positive reviews on every platform you
have access to is one of the best things for a small shop.

I have never thought to tip my mechanic. So I'm not a good
source for advice. However, I agree that if you are going to tip
that you want to ensure that it reaches the right person. I
would start with a phone call to the shop and maybe the owner. I
would explain what I wanted to do to see if they can identify
the individual(s) and if tipping is even welcomed.
I work a job that gets "tipped", well... actually, I get gifted.
I don't mean to sound ungrateful, but I really don't want the
gifts. I won't go into my stockpile of scented candles and
lotions and potions, but I have a large pile of unused gift
cards. I would guess that they are worth well over $1000. I do
use most of them, I just have so many that I struggle to use
them prior to a new one arriving. I haven't paid at Starbucks in
years. I work to pay my bills and to add to my retirement fund.
With that in mind, if possible, I would suggest a monetary tip.

       I'm on Team Money.
I think sending over a meal is kind of weird here, somehow.
Is there any way to know how many people worked on your car? $20
each directly to them might be good.

Thanks everyone! I learned that the owner of the shop worked on
my car which made the idea of tipping a little strange to me...
or maybe "more strange" since I don't usually tip my mechanics
either. In the end I just brought a box of paczki to the shop
for everyone. They looked surprised and happy to get a treat.
I'll also write a glowing review, and directly tell other people
with classics how well they treated me!

Great update! To me, this is similar to when the owner of the
hair salon does your hair; tipping is considered inappropriate.
So I would have probably felt the same way as you do. I guessing
that the positive review will mean the most to him! Either way,
I am glad that you came up with a solution that works.

       "box of paczki"
Fun (to me at least ) fact:
       Paczki in Polish means boxes.
Pączki with the squiggle under the a means the donut. So
what you wrote is that you brought them a box of boxes, lol!
(I know our English keyboards don't do the squiggle. But box of
boxes was too fun not to share.)
