My Stepmother!

A little BG. I’m in my mid fifties. My dad and her got married
2 days after my 18th BD. So I’ve put up with her treating me
like a old pair of shoes for decades.
In 2020 I was diagnosed with oral cancer. I had severe
complications! I’m now 2 years free and clear! What a great
time to travel to home state and see dad. I’ve lost well over
100 lbs and at 5’8 it’s not pretty. Having been overweight my
whole life and now way to thin, I can honestly say people are
cruel to all body types.
The day after my arrival the temperature dropped to 40 degrees!
I’m from south Fl and man was it cold. Dad was cold too. SM
was out of town until the next day. Dad turned the heat on.
Through conversation when she returned she discovered we had
turned the heat on. When my father left the room she let me
know how pissed she was. I apologized and said it really was
freezing. She then screamed at me”. IF YOU WOULD EAT SOMETHING
YOU WOULDNT BE FREEZING.!”
I said nothing just choked back tears. I cut our stay short and
hightailed it home. Having stared death in the face I refuse to
just let things go anymore! I mean they are in their 80’s. I
don’t want to scream back, ok, I do but. There were several
other small things the few days we were there.
Eating is very hard for me. Fatty me the food lover. I won’t
be winning any eating contests anytime soon.

oh, my poor friend! What a horrible experience.
My dad had oral cancer twice, and was always skinny, but
skinnier still when he couldn't eat well after the first, and
was on a liquid diet after the second.
It's all hard enough, but then to be attacked like that?
You don't deserve that, and I am so glad that you prioritized
yourself and went home.
(and your poor dad--he was chilly, and he should get to turn the
heat on in his home!!)

Let us celebrate cancer free!!! I can only imagine the
challenges that you have and continue to face. However, I salute
you for drawing the line in the sand. You don't deserve to be
treated that way. I don't think that there's anything that you
can do to change Stepmother's ways, but I do think that you can
make choices to protect yourself... like cutting visits short. I
would try to arrange to visit when she's away.
And for what it's worth, I'm not from South Florida and I still
turn the heat on when it's 40 degrees out. ::)

I am so sorry you were treated this way. This should have been
a happy occasion for you and your dad to celebrate you being
cancer free.
Stepmom should have just said "I'm too warm, would you mind if I
turned the heat down a bit?" instead of screaming at you.
By the way, I've been cancer-free since the beginning of 2021
but I am still cold all the time because the medications I am on
leech iron and calcium so I've become anemic and need calcium.
I am taking supplements as recommended by my doctor but I still
need a blanket when the air conditioning is on.
